Update:
Car has been at Motor Continental since Thursday - they were actually more expensive than Audi for the Cambelt and water pump service, however I wanted to get a few other things looked at and I'm guessing this would have worked out expensive at Audi.

A fair bit of work undertaken, together with a couple of unplanned items:

Cambelt inc tensioners, pulleys and damper
Auxiliary belt inc tensioner
Thermostat
Water pump
Gear box oil/filter change
Spark plugs
Assuming Engine Oil and filter as oil cooler has been dropped

The unplanned work relates to a coolant leak from the plastic pipe to the oil cooler - this has cost me another 3hrs of labour, the part itself is a tenner or so.

And today, I get a call advising me the alternator is kaput, potentially as a result of the coolant leak directly above it. This just as they'd buttoned everything up and were running the engine temps up when a plume of smoke from the alternator stopped play. There aren't too many choices online for replacements in stock, so will probably go with a genuine replacement, unless someone can recommend an alternative ? Might be a bit snobbish however I don't want a Lucas item in this car!

Not been a cheap month if I include the purchase itself - planning to get new tyres and wheels refurbed the following month, together with a 4 wheel alignment assuming all suspension parts check out via visual inspection.

I can't wait to get it back - 991 oil cap also ordered, as well as a spare Airbox lid from the hosts so I can get drill happy and get some induction noise going

I would leave your snobbery at home tbh otherwise your bill is going to get even larger LUCAS is an OE supplier of many car parts to many car brands.

Erm .... kinda too late!

Its very feasible this bill will top £1500 which is a ridiculous outlay on a 3k-ish car - somehow, my man-maths suggests this is perfectly reasonable ....

So a pretty hefty bill came my way 2 weeks ago and was actually higher than the purchase price of the car!

All labour based on a rate of £52.50/hr

This wasn't helped by a failed alternator and the rubber pipe to the oil cooler needing replacement. Plus I replaced both of the pre cat lambda sensors, and both of which were pretty much welded in.

I seem to do this with all the cars I buy, it makes me feel better even though it's makes little sense to anyone else

Benefits?:
Gear change has improved subtlety
idle which is now much more solid.
Engine light extinguished (spendy!)
Peace of mind (!)

Tyres, wheels and alignment next.
Front discs/pads are 70% worn, rears are 30%
Procured an air box lid for some cheeky sound improvements

To the bill... Just the total on the 3rd page - hopefully this is of use to someone

I thought the oil should be 5W-30?

5w30 or 5w40 are the usual choices. You can go as low as 0w30 but that's a bit thin on cold start for my likeing.

10w40 shouldn't be an issue, it's just thicker on cold start

I took their recommendation on the oil, which was partially based on only expecting I'd cover 2-3k miles this year. I'd prefer to use a 5w/40 but would rather dispose of 10w/40 rather than 5w/40 after 3k miles use.

Having said that, either quantum platinum or total quartz 2000 is available for £21-22/5litre so may try that next time

Hmm, engine light is back on again today having been extinguished since picking the car up 2 Friday's ago.
Starting from cold, there was a strong smell of it running rich from the exhaust - hope it's something other than the 2 pre-cat lambda sensors which were replaced as part of the service at great expense thanks to the down pipes being dropped.
