Like Ian has mentioned before, don't try to install steering wheels with dual stage airbags from newer models of Audis to D2 as dual stage airbags are not compatible with single stage airbag control unit of D2.

I'll be attempting this soon, can someone confirm that the current slip ring in my car (fl 3 spoke steering with factory tip tronic) will do? or is there some other slip ring for tip tronic and mfsw.

I'll be putting in a 4 spoke steering wheel with tip tronic and radio/phone controls

From my recollection, the tiptronic steering wheel has more wires through the slip ring than the MFSW, so you can reuse the old slip ring.

The reason is, the MFSW has a lot going on, so it moves the lighting / tiptronic / mfsw controls to a data bus that takes only two wires, instead of the original lights / tiptronic that took 4 or more.

Airbag and horn always have dedicated connections.

Only exception to this is if you want to fit a heated MFSW, and then you're into a totally different slip ring which has brushes to carry the current needed for the wheel heating.

I have managed to do it after more hours than I'm prepared to admit:



I used the guide from Sergey's link. In IT's first post pin 2 is not a gearbox ECU pin but a ground connection.

I used a new old stock clock spring (notice the in tact pull tag:



MFSW Relay mounting location(618):



Bits of add on wiring with additional fuse holders (will label these when i get a label printer)



And yes, the interior was vacuumed after.

One major issue and set back I encountered was that these clock spring connectors and crimps were NLA:



I noticed that I can use the updated part number connector which I've taken from another wheel I had, and I crimped new terminals on it.

Top plug is the new one and bottom one is the original NLA audi


Where i went wrong is that this new yellow connector is used on the wheel side, connecting wheel to clock spring, and on the clock spring side, connecting car loom to clock spring.

The wheel side connector has 2 fans that short out air bag igniter pins to avoid any static build up and prevent any unwanted 'effects' the clock spring side does not have it.




Using the wheel side yellow connector with 2 extra pins on the car loom side caused the bus or 'signal wire' to short to ground each time it was connected.

This caused me many many lost hours, trying to figure it out, in the MJ is the one that spotted it

And lastly, if you are going from a tip only car to mfsw, you have to remove the illumination wire from the plug and move the ground wire and add a switched 12+v feed in correct pins otherwise your shiny new £140 clock spring will turn into smoke and put the horn on till you disconnect the battery

In this pic we can see ground on pin 3 and power on 2, in the tip-only version pin 2 is ground..
