Default Overheating- Water pump/thermostat/timing belt

Having now got back into the car (see another thread....) I was tooling about Glasgow when the engine started to overheat. To cut a long story short, the flow through the radiator doesnt seem right (Its cool when the engine block is overheating. I think that its the water pump or thermostat. Any thoughts?

These were renewed along with the timing belt in Nov 2010 @ 53761 miles by A for Audi when in The Lairds ownership). Given that either needs the timing belt removed and that the car is now at 105000 miles whats the thought about getting the belt replaced too? I am also faced with an exhaust repair (leaking joint before the cats) along with final drive seal (which I noticed when investigating the exhaust problem!) so am keen to avoid unecessary expense.

I would change the belt, assuming the fault is genuinely water pump related

The time based interval is 5 years (I'm stretching mine to 6 due to low annual miles ) but given you've got 50k+ on this belt anyway you are probably best off dealing with the lot

Having spoken to the Indy he says that if the defect is thermostat/pump related then they will automatically renew the belt and idlers etc anyway at that mileage/time. I await his verdict on the problem this afternoon.

Definitely. The labour in a belt change is getting the front end dismantled and the belt off, all of which will be done to sort the water pump. It makes no sense to refit the old belt so slap a new one on and enjoy peace of mind

Garage agrees that its probably the pump and that many of the Audi water pumps fail due to plastic impellors detaching/breaking up.

He is about to order parts thru TPS but says that they dont do a belt replacement kit and that the parts need to be ordered separately. I said that I will do some digging as I know that SilverS8 on another thread mentioned a Contitech kit from MisterAuto at around £179. Have looked at these and there are a variety of kits from around £200 tho' not sure which is correct for AVP - CT 920K3 or K5 or K6? Can anyone help here? Also are Contitech and Gates OK kit as I had a long discussion with the mechanic about substandard /non-OEM ket and the issues?

Default Update + new issue

The garage now has the parts and is getting on with the jobs - first the timing belt and then the exhaust and final transmission drive seal.

After removing the front end they also saw that one of the engine mounts is gubbed. The rubber has deteriorated and is badly cracked - see photo - so that has to be done too

Default Update 2

Well, the job is now done. The culprit was the thermostat.
In the end after discussion about Contitech and other belt kits with the garage who have had some experience when asked to fit Contitech and other kits by clients (poor pulley alignment/failure) we both agreed that OEM parts should be fitted. (This will cost me when he has worked out the bill next Monday!) What surprised me was that the belt pulleys/ pump and thermo that were removed were Contitech despite the fact that The Laird - who owned the car a few years back - had the belt etc done by A for Audi in Glasgow 5 years ago who state on their website "Only Genuine Audi Parts Used".
Also, when the final drive transmission seal was done today the seal removed was different from the new seal ("old" type) that I had got them to order noting that, although the seal was replaced in 2010 the costs (no details of parts) in the invoice of the time led me to assume that the modded flange had NOT been fiitted. The removed seal is, I think, the modified type with an additional lip. The evidence from the condition of the flange was that, in the opinion of the mechanic it had NOT been changed. So, I guess that when A for Audi did this work they just ordered and fitted a new seal to the old style flange. The photos below show the new ("old") seal box and the seal removed.
Does anyone know if this is indeed a new type seal?
