I have had this a couple of times on the S8 and its a sod when it happens.

Hence I always have one of these about which connects to the Cigarette lighter and gives me enough juice to open the boot.

Its been handy a couple of times now

That happened to me over Christmas and my key also failed to open the boot. BUT, you may remember Sergey posting about cutting a small hole behind the rear number plate (he gave precise measurements) so that when this happens, you just pop in a small screwdriver, move it to the left and the boot opens. I cut that hole years ago, so no problem! Probably worth looking for Sergey’s post before it happens again.

Thanks Jim, I knew there was a post somewhere about this. Ill follow that up

But shouldn't the key open the boot in the case of a flat battery? Ive been checking the action on the lock and ive assumed that the mechanical action is in someway faulty but cant yet work out what should happen as not having any battery to drive the unlocking pump i cant figure how it works with/without power. All linkages seem ok.

Yes! Fixing the lock is the answer, not drilling holes in the car

It is a mechanical link and doesn't require any elastictrickery. Quite often it is seized so it won't turn at all which just requires dismantling and cleaning. I've not encountered one which just spins - that could be an issue with the tumblers being stuck and not engaging the mechanism, but its relatively straightforward to re-key a good used lock so thats also an option.

My key just spins as well. As did the lock on David’s car when I owned it. I stripped it, cleaned it, greased it and re-assembled it and it worked fine. But obviously not indefinitely! The trouble is, you only know it’s not working when you really need it!

On a tenuously related topic, why does the rear number plate have bolt holes, but not the front one?

To hold it more securely, presumably to stop a lightly fixed (self-tapping screws or adhesive pads) plate falling off when the boot is slammed shut?

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I really meant why doesn’t the front plate have bolt holes. The adhesive pads are pretty rubbish for a curved plate on the front. And they leave a mess when they have to come off.
