OK, so I've "partially freed" the trim panel and had a peek behind and can see the alarm horn. Might investigate further later, it's a bit damp here at present!

A few inches below the alarm there's all sorts of stuff, much of it shrouded in a black foam casing, with some green tubing. Is that the central locking pump etc.?
I can also see a fair bit of silver VERY non-OEM gaffer tape, so someone has been in there before for some reason. I think there was once a carphone kit installed so maybe it's from that.

OK, got the horn out, the only problem was the "bolt in a slot" holding it as it just wouldn't slide off. Had to force it out of its hidey-hole with the bolt still in the slot - tight! Hopefully putting it back is easier.
And disconnecting the wiring plug wasn't obvious, but it popped off eventually when I prodded the right area with the end of a screwdriver.

Maybe because someone had been in there before (and my CD brackets are gone), but I didn't need to remove much at all, just the plastic trim around the edge (2 plugs and the Velcro) and the bulb access panel.
The main side panel just eased out at the rear from behind the rear sill strip and from under the carpet enough to curve the rear end out and get at the alarm. No damage or creasing. Only took a minute to put it all back.

Hacksaw next.....

The box covered in foam is, indeed, the central locking pump. And David used a Stanley knife and hacksaw to cut the horn open.

Is there a part number on yours? David's looks very different from the one A8 Parts photographed for me, 8L0 951 605 A (see attached).

Thats the later one in your pic, there is an earlier one that looks like a square black cube box

Mine is the earlier one, non-A, so bulkier. The PCB inside looks OK on the component side though there's a bit of chemical "action" around the corroded battery contact.
Off to source some suitable NiMh batteries now.

Just why they make so many different types of connector is beyond me! You never know whether to press down, lever up, press together or whatever. Glad you got there in the end though. Your looks in similar state to mine witht the batteries leaking but before the PCB is ruined.
The batteries (from reading the TT Forum thread) can be obtained from Maplin and soldered in removing the present battery holders and spring contacts. Maplins Part No> BN 24B and they are 3/V150H 3.6V 160mAh.
I am off there tomorrow, perhaps.

I'm off to Goodwood tomorrow for the breakfast meet (60's supercars!) and taking father-in-law to hospital on Monday so it will have to wait.
Just took the batteries out and they were pretty much corroded the same, mostly on the -VE side. One was at 1.9v the other 1.2v.

The -ve terminal on the PCB is damaged by corrosion, but looks OK to solder so I'll get some suitable tagged NiMh batteries. As you say the Maplin BN24B seem suitable.

Just ordered a pair for £16 delivered free some time next week.

I did find a thread somewhere that explained how to fit these using the existing spring contacts etc. (slightly modified) but soldered in will be better I think.

Edit: An alternative would be a single house alarm box battery, 7.2v ones are only about £5. But they are typically about 25mm dia and 50mm long so might be a tight fit!
Something like this for example: http://www.buyabattery.co.uk/alarm-b...320bvh6a6.html

Just taken mine out and it's the earlier one too, part number 8L0 951 605. Is that interchangeable with 8L0 951 605A and, if so, what's the difference?

Mine is totally 'gubbed' though - all sorts of battery gubbins over the circuit board. Photos to follow.
