I've now realised this only happens when warm, after say 10-15miles.
Driving from cold it's lovely and smooth.
Could it be that the gearbox has the wrong oil in it? Or would it just misbehave all the time if that were the case?
It's had the oil / filter done but with 17 owners/ no history I dread to think by who
Has anyone else had experience of the wrong gearbox oil being used?
Thanks

I have the same engine/gearbox combo and experience the same issues, I always put it down to character of car, it's fine when driven hard but when driven gingerly it behaves odd. I thought it could be MAF giving wrong readings and therefor affecting load calculations but the measuring blocks seem to OK. I might still change it if I can get one cheaply. It seems too choose wrong gear sometimes and to lock/unlock torque converter at the wrong times. Mine has never had oil change and I never thought this was oil related but I might change oil and filter this summer because gearbox has started whining when cold after some abuse which saw gearbox temps raise above 120C. I don't expect it to cure odd behaviour but we will see. As for the whining on mine I also had similar problem in A6 around 2003 where after some rally kind of abuse weekend on private roads in woods it started whining, then couple of months later got stuck in safe mode. Took it to garage, it turned out the safe mode was due to poor connection somewhere under dash but they also changed oil and cleaned filter as they said oil was very burnt, a bit low on level and filter clogged with wear particles, it was better than ever after that with whining disappeared.

Thanks for the reply
I ran it round for a while with the maf disconnected but it behaves exactly the same
I have replaced the gearbox tcu with one from the sponsors which is the same as mine so not that, greatly improved the tiptronic change though

Anyone had experience of the wrong oil being used in a gearbox? Just been out in it again, drives lovely for 5 or so miles then plays up once warm?
The oil is clean and doesn't smell burnt I just don't know if it's the right stuff in there

ainarssems How long has yours done this for? Mines just hit 120k & I'm a bit worried if I don't get it sorted out it'll go bang & end up on the scrap heap!

There seems to be a school of thought that these gearboxes can suffer from pressure fluctuations caused by either wear or gunk (very technical term ), or viscosity change due to fluid age/abuse or spring wear (or a combination of course) around the main pressure regulating valve.
Whatever the cause, the result is pressure spikes which can cause irrattic changes and can lead to the clutch A drum problem.

The fix seems fairly simple:
Change the Pressure Regulating Valve over for a new one, and couple that with a fluid change.
This can be done from under the car with the transmission oil pan removed (which will be done as part of the service anyway).

Many (including myself) have opted for an improved design of pressure valve made by Transgo.

Ultimately, my transmission had a broken pipe internally, which caused most of its shifting issues and limp mode, however I now find the transmission shifts very smoothly and I have peace of mind with the Transgo valve fitted.

Cost is pretty cheap - Valve £50, Fluid £70-150 (depending if you use genuine fluid or not), Service Kit £30-50 (ditto), professional installation and basic trans service £200 (approx 3 hours labour).

As an aside, my transmission specialist who knows the 5HP24 well, mostly in Rangies, Beemers and Jags, seems to think they suffer from warping of the valve body, which leads to leaks across the pressure plate (the transmission equivalent of a blown head gasket).

I think it's been like that since I bought it 9 years ago, it was about 124k then an a bit over 140k now.

Thanks for that!
I will look into this valve thing but I barely use the car once a week so can't warrant throwing loads of money at a 20 year old car, it's perfectly useable just annoying

Hopefully someone has mastered the manual conversion on these by the time it does give up
