Default Audi Extended Warranty

So, my car is coming in as being £1700 to have the Audi Extended Warranty, named components with £250 excess.

The question being, is it worth doing? I know that these are rare beasts and can have expensive repairs, for peace of mind I am seriously toying with the idea.

Any one gone down this route or have experience with the Audi Warranty service?

I had that on my first S8 for maybe a couple of years, then ceased it. My logic:
1. It was fairly new (3 years) when I got it.
2. High value with potentially expensive repairs.
3. No experience of running one before.
4. Less "accessible funds" around to cover any big bills.
5. No other sources of information/support (like this forum); this was 15 years ago!
(Audipages may just have been around, but I don't think the D2 S8 had even made it to the US back then!)

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I believe I've read a fair bit of negativity towards them on this site. I've never had one, but I'm sure people like Ian (IT) will be along to shed more light on the pitfalls. Might be worth a search to see if you can find the thread I'm thinking of.

Edit:

This is the thread I was thinking of.

Not sure if the context is identical, but well worth a read.

I got one with my S8 as it was 'used approved'. I was valuable. I think I had a door handle, rear boot open repair and a power steering pump. The later was an engine out job. So I was very glad of it!

Then with the A6, I did not buy used approved but bought a audi warrentee separately. All components and no excess. Cost £2k. But for the first year of ownership you try to get everything done. Already I have a full cap actuator and a mmi screen mechanism and 7 months of that left to run yet.

Oh and as long as you report all faults prior to expiry of the warantee, then you are ok. Even if the repair is not carried out until much later... so go over it with a fine tooth comb a week before the expiry date.

Unhappy General warranty thoughts

Hi,

A pal bought a demo BMW (spit) 3 series, sraight 6. MEGA bills after a couple of years, totally relieved he bought it.

I never buy warranties. Risk is priced, knowledge reduces risk. I seek out knowledge (thanks folks!), am grateful for help and honest about my ignorance.

What price peace of mind? And is that peace of mind "all in the mind", i.e. when you try to claim do you get paid like my pal or "the bums rush" of get out clauses!

Robert

Audi extended warranties have gone up in price a lot in the last couple of years, combined with them being a lot sharper on things like remaps etc.

There was a time when it was about a grand, and a no brainer.

Nearly £1700 and I'd be thinking twice, especially with a £250 excess.

A £500 problem, will have cost you £1700 + £250. Ouch.

A £1000 problem, still costs you £1950.

You need a £2K problem to break even, and preferably multiple thereof.

And, if you read the small print, you should find that the initial diagnostics are chargeable, so unless you're very, very friendly with your dealer you'll need to fork out an hours labour on the off chance they unearth something you can claim for.

And the S8 is just typically not that unreliable or expensive.

Its peace of mind, but at over 10% of the value of the car......
