Thanks, I thought of using the glovebox but it's sort of inelegant (especially with the cable flopping about), though I'll definitely do it in the short term.

I'll take the whole glovebox out (again - did that a while back to fit an LED) and have a closer look, mine has a pretty tight "lid" on it, but the unit has a neat retaining clip that means it ought to be able to be mounted securely, maybe on the roof alongside the light to the front where the SDcard slot etc. will be visible and accessible?

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

The suppliers confirmed this limitation, it doesn't mute the radio on an incoming (or outgoing) phone call, only audio coming via the unit itself including the OEM CD.
But your phone rings normally, just have to hit the RADIO/CD/TV button to switch to CD mode and "activate" the box.

On a more positive note they supply a short extension cable with a multicoloured "splittable" plug allowing the CD connection on the back of the RNS to be split off and looped via the unit. But my cabling already has such a "splittable" plug on the loom so that's one less bulky cable to stuff into a cramped space.
It's a bit like this but longer and bulkier:

May be going out on a limb here, but not sure I have seen the word inelegant used in a car forum before, just hope its not going to lead to sinister discussions involving scatter cushions and other matching items

How about hiding the unit and using something like this for connecting SD cards

Maybe a small cut somewhere in the dash or RNS for swapping cards and this extension cable behind it so that it looks like OEM SD card slot.

Just digressing a bit I put my creative thinking cap on........
The CD changer is in the boot.
This gadget loops into the CD changer cable to the RNS, the only additional connection is an earth.
So why not put it in the boot (and deal with any resulting bluetooth issues later, it's just an extendable micro-USB lead) as I'll rarely need physical access?

So I got my socket set and screwdrivers out and went for a rummage in the boot.
Sadly, it's a different connector at that end, a 13-pin DIN-style round plug and socket. Does anyone know the exact pinout pattern and how it relates to the plug at the RNS end? It surely can't be that difficult to make a suitable adapter?
Maybe even someone has a scrap A8 with CD changer that they can cut off the matching plug/socket pair with a reasonable length of cable each side so I can make one from that.

As an aside I noted that the well under the CD changer only contained the parking sensor controller (no Bose ) and appeared to have plenty of space to hold the changer almost entirely below boot floor level. Has anyone ever done that?

Pictures of connectors adjacent to the changer attached. They seem to use a 13-pin DIN of which 10 are present. The other end only has 8 though so are all used or is there a splice somewhere to add extra signals?

Indeed it does and that's where it is now, all working fine and no chunky extension/adapter cable needed either, so the RNS slid back in very easily.
(the only feature I haven't tested is the mini-jack aux input as I don't really need it)

The bluetooth works fine too, I've tested it with 3 different handsets: Nokia (ordinary phone), Android and iPhone.
The first two connected quickly and worked easily and correctly but the iPhone was definitely rather temperamental and didn't work more often than not . But it's not my main handset so I'm not fussed.

99% certain that its a straight through from the 13 pin din to the (i think) blue Cd changer block at the other end. The audio loom is a seperate loom on the D2's and takes a completely different path across the car.

If you ever extract that loom and strip it down, I'm fairly certain that you end up with a single cable the is exclusively for the CD Changer. In fact, the connector in the boot is a multicore cable shrouded in its own dedicated plastic sleeve which I'm fairly certain you will find behind the dash if you trace the blue connector back up a little bit....

I feel fairly confident about this information, but cant for the life in me work out why i've needed to strip apart an Audio loom before....
