Really really nice toy Ian
(spec wise, I know nothing about A2s)I hear a lot of higher spec Audi owners say how good they are, I never liked the shape or thought they are any good, at least above the average. What is all about ?

And I think as the classic status increases, a rise in values, like the D2 is likely - But unlike the D2, they really are a very cost effective every day car too, so expect that depreciation reversal to be more pronounced imo....

I may well be needing a car for commuting soon if I change jobs. I currently cycle and would otherwise get the train but some places are too difficult for either. I've been looking at A2s recently and although thought they were ugly when they first came out, I do quite like them now! There are some available sub £1k but not sure what they'd need doing.
Aside from the tax difference, what are the petrol engines like on these (1.6?) or is it really best to get the 1.4 diesel?

There's a 3 cyl 1.2 '3L' TDi (I want one of these) special in LHD only, the 3 cyl 1.4 TDi we all got, and 1.4 petrol 16v and finally the 1.6 FSI. I wouldn't go out of my way for an FSI, from all the issues I've heard folks have had.

There are 3 problems with the petrols:
1) They seem really quite unreliable in contrast to the Tdi 2) They have a £100+ tax disc vs £30 3) They also have a much poorer MPG than the TDi. So, the petrol is ok to have if its very, very cheap, but the TDi is the one that is going to be depreciation proof. The 3L as mentioned is a bit of a novelty really. It has a special automatic gearbox, skinny tyres and was designed to do 100Km on 3L of fuel, hence the 3L badge. There was a polo 3L too, which is more impressive given it was steel.... But the 3L was LHD only, and really did take things a bit too far. The 1.4 TDi is defo the pick of the bunch, its just a case of finding a nice one with a few options on. The only leather ever fitted to the D2 was the top grade nappa leather so leather upholstery looks pretty dam good no matter what the mileage. Open sky sunroof is popular, but early ones are unreliable and fail. Climate control buttons are soft touch and the buttons wear off, making it look very scabby. But, its getting a bit picky really. They are a great little car, fold down rear seats, and the rear seats even lift out to give even more room. Avoid the 5 seater imo as its impossible to think of getting 3 people across the back seat, and the resultant removable seat squab is big and clumsy as a result. Fortunately, its the one option I don't have..... There was a bit of a facelift around 2003 which saw a slatted grill and possible some spec change but all my experience is pre facelift tbh... Coming from an A8 just remember *everything* is an option, even air con. If there is no climate control. There is no a/c. It was a bundle. Check out my spec list and consider that a standard A2 will have none of that...
