Or - you could 'lend' one of the cars to me (would use sparingly and keep it nice and tidy) so when you want to use it, it would be available
Thereby you get to keep both - win win

Anyway, I have 2 8's, and 1 absolutely has to go.......

So, do I sell the uber frugal (relatively lol) D3, uber comfy, dripping in spec, massaged and vented, radar cruise, B&O, full summer and winter kit cruiser which is also a seriously awesome motorway stormer, or let the D2 go ???....
The two days driving around the countryside was a lot of fun.
And I agree with the sentiment here. You should probably keep the D2.
If you sell it, how long will it take before you start looking for another?

You told me and another guy how special your car is, at the meet outside Durker Roods hotel. And that the guy who had sold it to you had no idea what car he was selling. I was really impressed when I started to understand how special it is. That changed my perception of the car!

Would you risk the car ending up in the hands of someone who doesn't know or care about it?

Thanks for the replies so far.....

To cover off a few comments.

I don't need the space, but fiscally can't justify having two spare cars on standby from a capital perspective. Insurance is pittance and the road tax isn't a deal breaker.

With 4 kids, A Q7 is a minimum requirement and after a run of horrific reliability issues with a VW Caravelle, I'm drawn to having 2 Q7's to guarantee I can always get everybody, everywhere, which is where I've ended up, albeit by accident. Annoyingly, both A8's are 4 seaters, which doesn't help my cause for keeping either of them, but its also not a clear pro or con for either !

If I'm in the office, i commute a lovely 15 minute back road to work. The D2 fits in great here.

If I'm at customer sites its anything from 30 mins to 6 hours each way. The D3 laps this up in every possible way. Comfort, economy, power, lack of depreciation. The Q7 can lap up motorways too, but I can leave the D3 absolutely anywhere and it never catches a second glance. The Q7s are a bit too bling to leave some places.

Its interesting how a lot of people have perceived this spec D3 to be easy to come by - It really isn't. B&O, ACC and sunroof on a 4.2 Tdi are a one handed counting job, before you start to want for anything else, like decent condition and sensible miles.....

The D3 is in near-perfect condition to sell on though, where the D2 does need a little attention to some of the common D2 gremlins to justify a collectors price tag. On that basis alone, letting the D3 go does seem to make a whole lot of sense.....

Surely the D2 won't be losing significant value with occasional use, so what's the point of getting rid of it on "capital" grounds?

This would appear to boil down to "Can I justify keeping the D3 for the times when I feel a bit uncomfortable taking a Q7"...…..

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Yes, in deed..... and on the other foot, can I justify keeping a car which is basically a toy I have no actual practical requirement for

I can sort of justify one, or the other, but definitely not both.....

It seems the D3 is for the chop, and perhaps I'll take some of the funds I recoup from that into doing a few of the outstanding bits on the D2.....

Not promising I'll keep it forever, but certainly it would need a good home to go to, and that could take some finding.....

I for one agree and have not seen a D3 4.2tdi with that spec in the years of trawling through AT.

Interesting how the poll is going.
As someone who was at the first meet. I have noticed a swing from initially all D2s. To meets where D3s dominated and now D2s outnumber the others 2 to 1. That must be telling us something?
