You need to reseat the connectors at the back of the cluster, I've had the same a week ago.

Is it possible that this is something to do with the coolant temp sensor at the back of the engine?

Rather than the one at the bottom of the expansion tank?

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Could well be, I've certainly had problems with them and replaced more than one.

Important to remember that the sensor has two separate parts to it, one feeds the dash display, the other the ECUs. So it can (and will) show a normal temperature as well as cause problems.

Tip: If you do replace it buy the o-ring seal and retaining clip as well!

No. If that had failed to max temp the fan would be howling and the temp gauge pegged at max. It'll warn at 130c and you'll know about it.

You may actually have a cluster failure. Its rare but not unheard of.

Next step if it were in the workshop would be to pull the cluster and locate T32b/18 and ground it right at the cluster. Dismantle the connector & find a spare pin and a bit of thin wire and just remove pin 18 and replace it with the spare. Ground the bit of wire and see what it does.

If the warning goes away you have a wiring issue between the cluster and the tank. If the warning doesn't go away you likely have a dry joint in the cluster itself which would require professional assistance to solve.
