Default Tapping noise under car

My cars developed a curious tapping noise.

It sounds a bit like someone under the car giving it a single tap with a decent hammer. Location would be roughly in line with the back of the engine?

It does it under certain circumstances;

1. At low speed when you use the brakes. Just a single tap/ thump.

2. Sometimes when you open the door to get in, before starting. Just one clunk as you open the door.

3. Accelerating or turning a corner. Again, just a single noise each time.

It does it pretty much throughout the journey, but never more than one clunk at a time.

Anyone had this or got any ideas of the problem?

1 or 3 I'd say either suspension or maybe an engine/transmission mount... But 2.. not so sure on.

Are you, or have you ever been, a golfer?

Seriously, my old 850 (Volvo, not BM) managed to get (at different times) both golf balls and conkers stuck in the air vent pipework. Never did get the conker out, and it would make a similar one-off clunk.

Oooh, you don't want a ball stuck in your pipework. Sounds nasty!

Seriously, though, how on earth did the golf balls and conkers get in there?

I'm pretty sure it's suspension related.

Although it passed its MoT a few months ago, it was in A for Audi recently for it's therm' problem, and they mentioned 'straight arms and drop links worn' on the report.

Sounds plausible to me and car going there on Friday.

Just wanted to see if A8 Parts folk had different ideas, beacause it could easily be something else!

I'd hate to spend a bunch of lolly on these suspension bits (albeit they are clearly worn) and find its still got the clunk.

Sounds like suspension related to me. The door opening is possibly just enough change of weight about the centre line to depress the suspension for a worn link / bush to click as it moves over the worn part.

Suspension parts worn can make noises appear in strange places...

A4Audi aren't known for talking you into work you don't need.

Psyche.

Agree. I hold A for Audi in high regard.

I remember once I had an MGB and it had a thump that happened every single time you went over a bad bit of road.

It was driving me nuts and after trying absolutely everything, including a replacement axle (!), it turned out to be a big screwdriver that I'd left in the boot. Every time we hit a bump, the handle smacked of the inside of the rear wheelarch....

It ran great with all the work I'd done, including taking the 'driver out.

'Straight arms and drop links' is going to cost about £430.
