Default Code 00849 Aaaaarggghhhh!

My car, A2 D2 4.2 40v, is suddenly shutting off the engine, notably after being in slow moving traffic conditions. On one occasion, scanning showed an Immobiliser error which I didn't make a note of unfortunately and hasn't reared it's head since.

When scanning:Code 00849 - 031 KWP1281
* DTC definitions not found. Please refer to vehicle service manual!

This code appears after each shut-down event, but it doesn't explain what it is.

When the car was recovered home (I had a disabled passenger with me), the recovery driver said he thought the car smelt hot, although I didn't notice that.
Car will restart after a few minutes of enforced inactivity, but I really need to get this sorted ASAP as I have become a mobile roadblock when in traffic!

Temp gauge needle never goes above 90!

Hoping you guys/gals will be able to point me in a clear direction...

Cheers,
DailyMike.

Ignition switch contacts implausible - some are on and some are not when they should all be the same. Given that you mentioned you're starting it with a screwdriver, that seems entirely plausible.

I'd probably look at changing the whole ignition switch assembly - this bit:

That requires dismantling the cowling, which you've probably already done, removing the steering wheel, clock spring and column stalks. Then you have to grind these two shear bolts off:

Usually I'll cover the interior with some thick cloths / rags / old blanket and cut slots in the bolts with a dremel, then chisel them out.

At this point its probably easier to swap the whole chunk than to try and change bits inside it.

Thanks for that nugget of info, MikkiJayne!

One of the codes I've picked-up on today stated misaligned contacts, so you're spot-on

I'll A8 Parts in the morning to see if they've that "chunk" in...

Enjoy what's left of the weekend and thanks again!

Mike
