Erm, back to our regularly scheduled programme...

Brakes this week - cleaned up the discs as although they were very rusty from sitting for three years, they're actually barely worn. Forgot to get any pics.

These are the rebuilt calipers ready to go back on with TRW pads. Interesting note - these are £45 a set and drop straight in to the calipers with no filing the edges down.

I evaporusted the rear brackets and hardlines and repainted both with rustoleum

Back on the car with one of the cleaned discs

Still missing one critical part due to a slight disagreement with the supplier

Hopefully the hoses will be here tomorrow so I can get the system bled.

Regarding the TRW pads - did you fit these because they go in nicely or they’re particularly good pads? I’d love to find a make of pads with a bit more bite if anyone has any recommendations.

I've used TRW on other cars and found them to be satisfactory - not particularly special, just good quality pads from an OE manufacturer at sensible prices. In this case, its because I have been very disappointed with Pagid and Brembo in this fitment (both from ECP so who knows what chinesium crap they actually were) and so I figured TRW were worth a try in a D2 (and because I can buy them from somewhere that isn't ECP). The fact that they actually fit the calipers is a pleasant surprise because they're the first pads I found to do so straight out of the box. Since these are rebuilt calipers and we'll have fresh fluid, pads, hoses, relatively fresh discs, and a brake block, this one is probably going to be as good as S8 Brembos get so I am interested to see how it behaves.

Is the whole "filing down the pad" issue not just down to the corrosion build up behind the stainless steel slide plates?

A couple of years ago I removed the plates on mine (no easy), cleaned off the corrosion and now the pads fit nicely. I've tried Pagid, Brembo and original OEM to see if there was any improvement in the braking but there didn't seem to be. All slid in easily enough though.

I had mine rebuilt a few years ago and when they are split and the area behind the stainless steel sliders cleaned and sealed and the sliders bent back to shape they accepted pads no problem. Trouble is that at the recent service the Brembo pads needed filing to fit so the corrosion has started again

I rebuilt the calipers on my grey S8 and had the plates sitting as flat as they could be, and still couldn't get any pads to fit properly. They all jam up, they all squeal, and braking is always terrible, which is why they are going in the bin in the spring. Maybe I just put too much paint on them

What doesn't help if you're cleaning the plates as a DIY exercise as they're a really random T27 size, which is rarely included in DIY tool sets. Luckily one of my sets had them.

Was in there today (more damn Skoda flexihoses!). They reckon if they haven't got it they can get it. Ask for "old" Nick apparently (though I'm not sure how much he likes being called old, it's just to distinguish him from the two other Nicks they have there). I don't work there btw, just seem to go there alot - been using them 25 years +
