Here is the part list for 2002 foot mats from fresh ETKA and it does not show any caps, so I guess 2002 did not have any caps. And yes Vin search is working, not pickig up exact details as I do not have access to VW servers but it narrows down selection. Best Etka release I had.

Wow, the EKTA sounds really cool!

But that'll mean mats have to be from a 2002 model - limited choice. But I nearly bought the ones on eabay for the 98-01 model - so this thread has saved me £40!

It does not mean that they will not fit. I for example have a FL windscreen on 1997 PF car even if ETKA say it is not meant to be.

Definitely nothing missing and definitely nowhere to put a 'cap'.

So, if there's anyone else following this amazingly mundane thread, if you have a 2001 and/or a 2002 '8, what are the fittings for the front carpet mats like. I'm getting fairly confident that it's caps (see photos earlier in this thread) to 2001 and 'polo' (as photos on this post) 2002. I also suspect that the 'polo' fitting was used in the early D3s.
OK, I'm going to resurrect this 100% anal thread because my mats are pi**ing me off!

When I got the car (2003 FL D2 S8 with beige interior) it had NO drivers side TOP mat at all and the front passenger one was stained.
So, randomly finding some GENUINE (and they were!) Audi A8 mats of the right colour on eBay I bought them. Didn't think about fixings at the time as they seemed to work - at first!

Never been 100% happy with the fit and especially the fixings. These are coloured CAPS but they don't locate properly and the drivers mat especially tends to come adrift and slide forward.

So I decided to investigate, and in the short term removed the "polo" fixings from the foam-backed carpet below to give a bit more length on the fixing peg and this "sort of" works.
Then I looked at the stained passenger-side top mat, decided the stain was probably from a spilled can of coke and cleaned it, fairly successfully.
Swapped it with the one I bought and it fitted perfectly. It has the (smaller hole) polo-mint type fastener, so just clips down so that the coloured top of the fixing peg is flush and all looks good. Definitely preferable to the bulging cap!

So now I have the passenger side all fine and dandy having replaced the main carpet original fixings. But the drivers side I'm not happy with, it's rather a bodge though stabler than it was.

So, are these top-mat fixings with the small hole still available; if so I'd like to get some (in beige) for my drivers mat?
And does anyone know whether the "dome" type fixings (which don't work well) were PF or FL or some other period?

Incidentally, I have a second set of black hardwearing top mats for winter use. These have the "small hole" fixing and fit perfectly as they did on my PF S8 as well! Except if you look carefully you can see a beige peg in the centre of a black fixing, but do you know - I don't care!

So I'm beginning to think the "dome" fixing was a bit of an aberration on D2's. Anyone else got anything to add?

Or if you have some mats that you're scrapping with beige small-polo fixings I'd very much like them!

I made the same mistake!

I think that the dome fitting is pre-facelift and the 'polo' fitting is FL (someone will be along to confirm or otherwise call me a numpty!). I bought the earlier ones as they're better quality than the FL ones, but, like you, I was never happy with the fitting.

The genuine mats do come up once in a while on fleabay, but I don't know if they're still available from the stealer. I'll keep my eyes open.

The mats I bought were in genuine Audi packaging and looked like they had been in stock for some time, but are the cheaper later FL material.
Pretty sure my PF overmats (late 98 car) were NOT domed, but IT could confirm that as he has it now.

Well I've been doing some "research" and identified a source of what appears to be a genuine equivalent to the "polo" top mat clips and ordered some in beige. Not cheap though.

I'll report back when they arrive; if not suitable they'll go back for a "distance selling regulations" full refund.

Well the clips arrived and look 100% genuine and the correct design and dimensions.

Part number is 3D0061493AQ70 (beige) if anyone needs to know.

Sadly the place that sold them has no more, I got the last ones, though there seem to be plenty in the USA!
Looks like they can/will restock - at a higher price than I paid. http://www.shop4volkswagen.co.uk/pro..._3D0061493AQ70

Edit: Well not quite the correct dimensions.
The original mats have lower (black) section 3D0061493 with a segmented clip mechanism.
The new clips I bought are 3D0061493A with a flexible snap-on ring clip mechanism which works equally well over the same locating pegs.
BUT the whole thing (coloured top + black base) is a bit chunkier in the middle and requires about a 3mm larger diameter hole in the mat, which is a bit tricky to enlarge tidily and get right.

So, if you're buying these clips buy a matched top and bottom OR be VERY careful about the version as the joint between top and bottom is a different diameter.

PS The main difference between what came with the mats and the "polo" style ones is that the latter is only 2 parts (black bottom and coloured top) whereas the eBay mats came with standard black fittings (top & bottom) plus a coloured cap that snapped on top.

All done, both sides.
This is the drivers side all neat and tidy now, with the offending domes sitting on the mat.

Onwards and upwards:
Leaking driveshaft seal next week (and MOT) - thanks Reffro for reminding me about the lovely smell down at the Speech House.
After that it's replacing some damaged (over-cleaned) Alcantara on the doors and the trim around the window switches.
Then, later in the year, the wallet-gutting "Full Monty" 80K miles service - belts, water pump, gearbox fluid etc. etc.
