Default D3 blower motor into d2?

Hi my 97 s8 blower motor has died due to the solar sunroof running it constantly for years. I’ve found a used replacement but it could well be on its last legs aswell I have no way of knowing.
Can anyone tell me if a d3 motor would fit instead? It’s looks the same from pictures except the plug but I can sort that. I’ve found a new one cheaper than a used d2 one so hoping someone has the answer
Thanks

That's very much worth knowing, especially if this is commonplace:

What's the D3 part number?

Edit: Looks like D2 is 4D0959101 and D3 is 4E0959101 or 4E0959102 possibly with an a suffix.

If you have the time to document (with photos) what you do, including rewiring the plug, it would undoubtedly become a very useful "sticky" thread.

I Rarely have any spare time hence my car has been off the road since November because it’s undriveAble, however I’ve searched this forum a lot over the years And always managed to find what I’ve been struggling with. So it’s about time I gave something back!
I’ll take some pics when i get a chance and post them up on here when I work out how. I don’t have a proper fault code reader so I’ll be unable to advise wether it throws up fault codes or not.
I understand it’s a common problem so hopefully it works and can help other people if / when theirs fails. Mines probably original so managed 23years with solar roof I imagine without that they will outlast the car /gearbox

Polarity of the wires is not obvious, and on replacement factory motors for the D2 actually wrong, so replacement motors spin backwards and don't work.

I would suggest checking that old and new motors spin in the same direction once you've grafted the plug on (possibly hook it up using terminal blocks to test), and don't simply trust the wire colours even if they appear to match.

I actually did this on my car just last month. The squeaking of the original fan was driving me mad, so I bought a replacement D3 blower and swapped the plug.

This is the one I bought.

If you get the polarity wrong, then wouldn't the fan suck air from inside the car and push it into the engine compartment? I didn't check polarity at all when splicing the connector, but I get air from the vents, so I'm assuming it's running in the correct direction?

Surprisingly no, it blows in to the cabin still, but only about 10% of its normal airflow, leaving one very puzzled as to why the fan is making loads of noise but there's nothing coming from the vents.
