Yeah, maybe I should have mentioned that I use Elsawin when I asked about a comparison of the two. I used to have all four brands installed in my car laptop, and when I swapped the HDD to a SSD, I installed just the Audi and VW ones (brother has a VW).

As Andrew says, even with Elsawin, "you have to use your imagination at times" to understand some things.

You have to remember that I bought Bentley (on CD) for the D2 getting on for 20 years ago for use with my first S8! I've no idea if there was any alternative (outside the motor trade) then and IIRC I was using VAG-COM too.

Since then the Bentley data content hasn't changed but the display software has had one upgrade. I've had multiple registration/transfers/re-registrations over the years as I think I'm only allowed 2 installs. VM's obviously remove that restriction.
