I used to get around 300 miles or more to a tank on my daily commute in my S8, so that’s not so great. But if you’re buying any kind of ‘8 for economical motoring, then you probably need a bit of therapy!
I’d jump at ‘Big Red’ if I were looking for a 2.8 though - it’s been through MJ’s hands, so it’ll be the best on the market by miles!

Current mods: solar sun roof, 20mm rear spacers, 15 mm on front, red brembo callipers, 6k headlights, rear view camera, engine remap, alloy dash dial rings, alloy navi rings, tt/phaeton pedal upgrade, (and custom matching foot rest) dension ipod interface & parrot hands free kit (both fully hidden), av input, tv in motion switched thro' PF switch in blanking plug right of steering column, Audi 'quattro' sill covers, repositioned centre console switches, radio clock, .
Planned mods: auto-dimming rear view mirror, dash cam (as steamship's), fit the ski hatch, refit philips drl's (or maybe not - nope, definitely not - horrible botch!).

I have been contemplating selling the 2.8 recently. I love it to bits, but the gearbox makes me cross every time I drive it, which is not often enough to justify keeping it. Offers would need to start with a 5 though, which would buy a reasonable S8...

Can’t you reprogram the gearbox with VagCom?

Not to the extent where you can change shift points. You can change the program to a slightly more dynamic one where it's more eager to change down but that's it. BR already has that enabled. It helped a little, but not enough for my liking.

Both the 2.8 and 3.7 gearboxes are programmed for economy and so they seek <2000 rpm where possible. That's probably fine in town, or maybe in the Netherlands, but I live in the lumpy Devon countryside so when it changes in to 5th at 30mph going up a hill, then bogs and changes down to 3rd again, thats a little frustrating. Hence why I drive it in S all the time as then the shift points are more like the S8, although it does still need overriding with the Tip buttons every now and then. My driving style has changed such that 'D' is simply a waypoint between R and S D is useful for cruising on motorways though, since S won't use 5th.

Ive bought myself one now,

was very tempted by MikkiJanes's red 2.8, absolutely stunning car but I think i would feel guilty having it off him its so nice!

In the end I bought a 4.2 model, needs a bit of work, paintwork, timing belt due etc but got it at what i think is a good price factoring all this in.

Thanks all for advice and info, very useful.
