Hi I'm not a 100% sure but i think it's there to make bleeding easer, otherwise the pedal sticks down and you have to try and hook your toes under it to lift it back up! (Bled a clutch yesterday and it stuck down and it was a pain)

thanks, I'll try to keep the spring in that case. At least it sounds like its not critical for actual braking.

Thanks Mike, I am really desperate to complete this now after 4 year of waiting.
We also need a aluminium-welding expert to weld these together for us.
I'm still not sure what material to use for the clutch pedal, I'm thinking Audi used aluminium for a reason. Although dont some A4's and A6's use a steel pedal?

You can MIG weld ali but you need argon gas and obviously ali wire. TIG will be the way forward for you.

I guess not very well with regular MIG as MIG is constant voltage but TIG constant current, also not any TIG is suitable for aluminium, you need high frequency AC TIG to do good quality welds on aluminium.

Thanks Dave I may take you up on that offer although I am far away from Oldham (down in Kent). I just need to shape this bracket for the master cylinder and over-centre spring.
Looking at one of the spare pedal boxes I have, looks like I could chop one of those up, as all thats really needed is a angle shape to provide support.
I'll keep chopping away and let you know what I come up with.
Neil thanks for your suggestion too.
