Not again mate this was the car i put a note on in portsmouth to buy sounds like a mare at the moment! hope you get it sorted out soon, like Andrew said to me when i was complaining about my coolant leak last week from the oil cooler, these cars demand significant initial investment to us new owners!

Half expecting this problem now and gearbox failure

Aww crap

The cats are off my FE at the moment if you need something to get you going again short term while you sort out a permanent solution?

Cheers bud

It appears I'm going through rough patch every few months and can't seem to catch a break. It's annoying because I know the cars been looked after prior to my ownership so I'm trying to look at it like you say, high initial investment upfront followed by many years of bliss

I pray you don't get this issue - I saw your threads on the coolant leak and lambda issues so let's hope that's it for you

Thanks MJ, that is an extremely generous offer I have plans in motion but if for what ever reason we get stuck I will be in touch.

My friend is coming over Saturday to cut open the cat and gut it before welding it back up. Hopefully this will get her running again so I can progress with a plan I've been toying with in my head for the past few months.

I think I've pretty much convinced myself on using this "opportunity" to carry out a mod or two.

Watch this space..........

When the cats are off, have a quick peek down the exhaust with a torch or a cheap ebay keyhole cam if possible to check for pieces of cat that may have gone further down. What I found on my D2 when the cat failed it sent pieces down the exhaust which got trapped further down. Luckily they were only small and didn't choke the engine but made a heck of a rattling sound.

Good luck I hope the fix goes well.

I remove the cats, and put 2 2.5inch tubes all the way to the rear silencer.

I did it in diferent steps, first the cats, 1 was tottaly bloked, the car run better and fuel was half it use to eat.......so 2 big tubes all the way to the rear.

A lot of noise , much more fuel economy, and run like it have 40hp more.

This is now rectified. My mechanic sliced open the exhaust and found a solidified peice of cat internal had broken lose and lodged itself around the rear of the cat perfectly blocking the flow of gases...the car would not even tick over!

After welding back up and resetting the fault code it seems to be running very nicely again. He said there should still be enough filament left to not trigger the EML and after 6 weeks of driving It hasn't yet.

Whilst it was off the road I bought the wife a brand new Smart forfour Edition Black. My neighbours laugh as we have the biggest and smallest cars now

My driver's side cat just started rattling yesterday after I caught it on a rock in the road

Luckily I can pinch one off the FE for the meet but I think when I get time I'll probably gut both of them and weld a straight piece of pipe inside the cat housing so it looks stock

Has anyone got a rattly or broken passenger side cat that I can cut up? That one is still fine on mine so no point damaging it if I can avoid it

It was my drivers side cat that also gave me grief. Similar to the upright saga I/you have, second hand cats never seem to turn up!

If I keep the S8, I'm taking off my good cat and the slightly butchered one too and replacing them with sports cats and a full exhaust system.
