Default MMI spat out the dummy

Took the A8 out last night for the first time since doing the ATF change, wheel change and boot lid opener. Everything was great, tyres well balanced and no shudders, gear changes as smooth as always and when I reached my destination a push of the boot lid button from the drivers seat and the boot opened perfectly.

This morning I thought I would check that there were no leaks from the gearbox sump gasket, this involved moving the Range Rover from the ramp outside and placing the A8 on the ramp.

I started the engine of the A8 and the MMI screen came up, but it was blank, no sound and no response to button pushing. I tried the reset as per owners manual and still nothing, I called the previous owner (mate of mine) who had mentioned something about resetting it when I took the car off him, he told me to unplug the connection at the rear of the unit in the boot. This involves removing the unit to allow access to the plug and when I plugged the unit back in I could hear various fans and motors kicking in. Sadly when I tried the MMI it was still in the open position with the same symptoms as before so a look on the internet for a diagnosis revealed that it was one of the many components that had failed and would cost £plenty to repair.

I decided that before I delved any deeper into the faults I would do the old Range Rover trick of battery disconnect, leave it 15-20 minutes and then reconnect. That did the trick and everything is working once again.

Was it a glitch? Why did the MMI reset not work? Will the problem return? Who knows, but it seems to be working now so here's hoping it was just one of these Black Tuesday (13th) things
