Petrol smell after filling up the car to full
Another week and another irritating problem with the 8.
I need to drive from Blandford to Folkestone next week for work, so I have filled up the car in anticipation of the longest trip I have yet to undertake in the 8. I have driven about 2 miles since filling up, and I was outside checking over the car as I do weekly and noticed a petrol smell (car has been standing about 9 hours since being filled up). There is no sign of petrol anywhere under the car, so I popped open the boot and the fumes in there were terrible. Done some digging and I am guessing that the culprit maybe here. as the smell seems strongest in that area. http://members.rennlist.com/drive944...ak_repair.html http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=15458120 I did get the smell last time I filled up as well, but put it down to overfilling at the time as after driving for a while and using some fuel the smell went away. So this time I stopped the pump at the first click, and still have the smell, so it looks like until the fuel drops below a certain level I have a small leak. The weathers not great, so not taken anything apart yet. I'll probably end up going for a drive just to use some fuel to stop the smell.

Just been out and took the carpet out and took the cover off, and what did I see..... Apart from a hatchet job where Jo Bloggs motors changed the fuel pump in 2011, yes there was
Petrol on the top of the sender unit. I have soaked up the petrol thats there, it will come back again but hopefully not till I fill up again. So I'll need to get a new cap and seal from Audi, and lets hope thats all it is. Then I'll straighten the hatchet job and hopefully the plate will fit back on properly.

Went out for a run today, for the sole purpose of dropping the fuel level in the tank. After 25 miles the smell is lingering, but an inspection of the pump / sender assembly shows no fresh fuel. What I can smell maybe the result of the escaping vapour through the seal as the tank is still very full. At least the smell has now gone when you stand near the car, which is a relief.
Whilst I had the cover off again, I have straightened out as best I can the damage caused when the fuel pump was replaced. I reckon whoever changed the pump has reused the same O ring and cap when they fitted the replacement, as it seems to have been leaking for a while. Note to ones self, do not use Fairway Tyres in Rickmansworth to change the fuel pump. 168,260 Miles, March 2011, Fuel pump replaced by Fairway Tyres in Rickmansworth, 172,000 Miles, August 2011, Investigate fuel smell in cabin / boot, different place but obviously did not spot the leak. 173,900 Miles, January 2012, car purchased by me. 175,500 Miles, where we are today (April 2012)

Petrols expensive enough without it seeping away through a seal ,glad nothing worse happened while it was leaking

it was just a tiny dribble, but any leaking petrol could be a disaster in such a confined space.
Part now on order from Poole Audi, should have it tomorrow morning. Total cost £10.01 , lets hope it stops raining and I can change it quickly.

Got the part from Audi, new cap and O ring. Tried to remove the old one at lunch time and the old one just wont budge. i am using a pair of long nose pliers and a large adjustable on the pliers to get some leverage but despite lots of creaks it does not want to unlock. Looking at the new one, it needs to be turned anticlockwise to release it. I guess the old rubber O ring is creating additional resistance.

I am pretty sure it was clock-wise to open sender and anti-clockwise for the big black cap.
