Default Drivers Door Hinge Change?

Hi There,

My PF D3 has a slump on the drivers door, it means that it is not quite sealing on the window trims and you get wind noise which is irksome. Also ruins the lines a bit.

Opening the door full and there is play when you wobble it. Speaking to a mechanic friend he thinks it is the upper pin which has slop in it. He was saying he thought to replace the hinge it's a bumper/headlight/wing off situation and not a quick or easy job.

Anyone with any experience of this ?

He also wondered about knocking the pin out and getting a bigger one turned up by a local machine shop as another potential fix?

I also had this when i got my D3. My local bodyshop "adjusted" the hinges a little bit which improved it but it was never perfect. I got the impression that replacing the hinges was a big job and would end up being very costly.
Might be worth having a bodyshop have a look at it before going any further.
I had a similar issue with a Touareg after a window regulator was replaced. In this instance it was only the top of the door frame around the glass that was out of alignment. I went back to them and they put it right by taking off the door card and adjusting the upper door frame only.
My D3 drivers door didnt get any worse in the 5 years / 200k miles I had it but it always bugged me that it was not as it should be.

Page 34 onwards of this document should help a bit
It gives all the tolerances and gaps for checking front door fit and hinge adjustment etc

Hi There,

Yeah. I'd had a look through that, but it's very brief and short about the hinges!

It mentions about removing the Dash Panel (GR70) which on looking at PDF29 seems to mean taking the whole interior of the car apart, though I can't actually see anything to reason quite why???

It also says that there are bolts on both hinges that are "fitted to -A- pillar from inner side of vehicle" yet nicely forgets to mention how you access these (no GR?? ref there about taking the whole car apart)

It seems that there are no adjustment to the hinges, they are just replaced. There *IS* adjustment to the catch plate (which I think the dealers did so that the door closes without a thunk). Any panel gaps seem to be adjusted by tweaking the window frame on page 53, which seems a bit of a bodge to me?
