Default Squeal

1 week into ownership my car has developed a squeal. I looked under the bonnet and it seemed to be coming from the alternator or the pulley above it (is that the belt tensioner?). Anyway, I shut the bonnet and it stopped!

But next time I started the car it came back. So I tried something - I turned the Aircon off. The squeal went away!

Does that mean it's definitely the Air con compressor? I know A8parts has second compressors - is it a big job to replace? The whole system need draining? Can anyone recommend someone in the South East who would do that kind of work (well) with second hand parts?

Thanks

It's probably your aircon fan. Try switching to econ mode when the engine is running and you can hear the squeal. If the squeal dies down over a few seconds then it's the fan. If it stops dead then it may be the compressor bearings.

Conan. It did seem to go away pretty quickly (I'm not with the car at the moment). If it was the fan, would it die away as the fan naturally comes to a stop? If so, the noise stopped quicker than that.

Jeremy,

I had the same squealing problem.
The best way to check is to get someone to look at the right hand side fan as you press the Econ button (as Mike suggested).
If the fan stops and the noise stops it'll more than likely be the fan bearings which is a lot cheaper to replace than the compressor!

Yeah,

A8 Parts had one in stock. It's been fine since.

I thought it was the compressor but Ian diagnosed it at the A8 meet last year.

Saved me a bit of money (cheers Ian)!

Steve

It was the fan! In fact, pushing on the back of the motor gently stops the squealling so I will change that in the next few weeks.

Thank goodness it was the cheaper option! Thanks for your help
