Hi Julian,
As ever some good info. Thanks. My BEM is 160 so I guess the best is to leave it alone. Unless you recommend a newer replacement. Address 61: Battery Regul. I wasn't aware that the logging was different until Ross Tech and I looked at different ECU levels and we saw the logs were much 'better' in the later ECUs. The Audi bulletin doesn't really say what was wrong with the firmware versions that were bad but unless you're interested in fuller logs [and if your car works - who cares? ] then I stick with what you've got. Just bear in mind the info. if you ever need to replace the BEM ECU. [In my mind the ECUs with flawed levels have no 'Ebay value']. Regards - Julian Some technical info. in attached text file

Thanks for some great information. If I fit a new battery whilst on this model of battery management software, do you think it'll drag the battery down? I don't have the battery charge monitor on my MMI so the 10% display issue isn't a problem, however the technical note suggests that the module itself will discharge the battery. |

You can fix this with VCDS as it's a setting that's been changed to remove it from the MMI. Most of us think it doesn't add much value but it's easy to turn back on as follows: Select Control Module "07-Control Head". Click on "Adaptation - 10". In the "Channel" box enter 02 and click 'Read'. In the "New value" box type in sum of the current value + 32. Click "Test" Click "Save", then "Done, Go Back" "Close Controller - Go Back - 06" Exit VCDS Reboot MMI BTW, FYI, these are the setting values for Adaptation Channel 2 +00001 = Left-Hand-Steering (LHD) [Standard] +00002 = Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available +00008 = Oil Level Display available +00016 = Digital Radio (DAB) Video Transmission +00032 = Battery Status Display active

Thanks Julian.
I will have a look at those with VCDS later this week. |

Update for you all Gents.
I have installed a replacement amplifier (no CP removal required). Installed and coded a new battery. Cleared all the VCDS codes and performed a re-scan. The new battery seems to have helped remove a number of faults. See attached file which shows what I'm left with. Navigation system:control module defective. The system is working fine so I assume this is a blip. Aux heater unit locked: I don't think that I have this fitted on my car. Level control cannot be reached, is this the air suspension ? It's working fine. I've got a second hand tail light on order, will plan to fit that next week. Then I need to have my local Indy fit a new washer bottle. Once I've sorted the above issues it'll be time for a good clean and enjoy the car for a while. If anyone can offer any recommendations based on the remaining fault codes I have, this would be well received. On a side note, since replacing the battery I've noticed that the keyless entry system is working very well. Thanks for your help and support this far. All the best Dave |

I have made some enquiries with some second hand part dealers that are selling battery ECU's but they are unable to tell me what the software version is. In fact it is very obvious that they don't have the same depth of knowledge on the subject as yourself. I'll keep my eye on the small ads but for the time being I will likely have to live with the version I have. Dave |

But it's easy ; the software level of the ECU is printed on the Audi label. Most electronic parts were never designed to be updated with new software so the label indicates the level. [The exception is all the Media related ECUs - Amps, Tuners, NavBox etc; the number on these labels is the original version which may well have been updated by subsequent MMI updates]. On the A8 BEMs, the software level is at the far right of the line starting SW; see attached examples of two Ebay samples. Julian

And you will have an Aux Heat unit as you have a 3.0 TDI; when they fail a few times they get locked. My 3.0TDIs locked too but it's not too crucial as it's for very cold weather. In my case, we don't get much of that in Kent. Oh, and BTW, I think I saw you had a slight out-of-date MMI too from your Control Head output. The latest/last version for the 2G A8 was 5570 and I think you're on 5150. Julian
