Default MMI Motor Problem

Hi All, three months into A8 ownership and the costs are mounting up...

At the weekend my MMI screen refused to raise when starting the car. I pressed the button to manually open it and it made a half hearted appearance stopping about a third of the way out of the dash. I pressed again and it retracted fully as normal. Next press up it came to its full position, but it didn't want to stop there and the motor continued to presumably spinning the cogs for a further 3 or 4 seconds before it stopped.

This has continued ever since, it opens fully but wants to 'keep going' for a few seconds causing a loud ticking noise and the screen to 'wobble' as I presume the cogs are still being driven. Everything is then fine and when I finally switch off the screen retracts normally.

A local specialist has told me I need a new motor. They believe Audi will only sell a whole new unit (including screen). Has anyone else had similar issues and/or found a solution If I can get a motor they are happy to fit it.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi

Yes thanks I called them a couple of times late morning but got no answer. Hadn't left a message but have now.
I see on ebay there's a replacement service that requires shipping to the States for repair. Assuming its cogs not motor. Don't fancy that too much, would like to try and get the gears/cogs myself.

There was a replacement gear on eBay somebody had made a batch of, made of brass, it was £45 I thought this was the cheapest option that I was going to go for

Heard stories of the bronze cogs causing other parts to break as they have no give, whether it's true on not I'm unsure.

Click here for the cogs on ebay

The garage who had my car believe a previous customer sourced the required cogs and are going to contact him to get details. I'm guessing he got the eBay cog but will post back with any news.
Thanks again for the help so far.

Theres a service in the states where you send the whole unit away, not sure if the same is available over here but you could message them and see what they say?

Hi Architex_mA8tey

I saw the post to US option but wasn't keen. I have ordered a brass cog off eBay.
I've also ordered a steel one from someone on a another Audi forum. Both being shipped in from abroad with repair instructions so I'll see how I go.

Fingers crossed it works and doesn't cause other problems.

I never did get an answer or a call back from A8 Parts.

Quick update. MMI screen has continued to hibernate, making occassional half hearted attempts to join in the fun of my daily commute. I have received the replacement cogs and now have one in brass and one in steel.
I've booked the car in next week to be 'done' having decided not to try it myself.
The steel cog came with some fairly clear looking instructions so fingers crossed the cog is the problem and the garage are able to get my MMI screen working again.

I'll post back afterwards and if the instructions prove to be any good I'll add them to my post.
