Yeah, fairly common. I'd read about the 'rattle of death' from the timing chain, but have more recently read here and other places, it is seemingly normal.

Very common in cars up until 07, mine does it and has done for over 20k miles, this week I'll replace the tensioners though and this should stop the start up rattle, it's due to a faulty design in the one way valve in the tensioner I'm led to believe and it releases pressure when resting, if you think that's bad then wait until you do an oil change usually I'll turn it over let it catch then turn it off again then start again as it sounds horrendous till the tensioner fills up.

Edit: oh and it's usually not much of an issue until it starts getting noisy when running, if it goes quiet once started then your usually fine, mine only made a noise when cold but it'll do it when hot now too, it'll quieten down but really to stop the shame of every time I start it it sounds like a bag of nails they need replacing, and luckily for us A8 owners as far as i'v read they can both (top tensioners) be done in situ

Mine does it on start up, and is only noticeable with the windows down, and even then it depends if I'm on the drive or not. If I'm elsewhere the noise doesn't bounce of the fence, gate or house and it's inaudible inside the car.

It stops because the oil pressure builds in the CCT. Obviously things start ageing like we all do but that doesn't mean its shot provided it stops shortly after engine on.

I'v been using fully synth shell helix in mine 5w 30 iirc, seems a nice oil and quite cheap from the right places

Edit: if you want to pay the extra though, Mobil has always been a very good oil, it's just quite expensive, I change mine every 10k instead of the nearly 20k on variable services

I have been using 2 x 5 litres of this from Opie oils when they have a 15% off or free postage offer because it is officially VW approved 507.00, rather than just merely recommended where a 507.00 is specified:
Gulf Formula GVX 5w-30 fully synthetic engine oil for VW / BMW / Mercedes -10 Litres
SKU: 00097406

Total: £46.56

507.00 outperforms the 505.01 etc...according to this chart..
http://sas-origin.onstreammedia.com/.../pc/index.html

If you go to a Vauxhall Dealer and ask for the- buy 3 get 1 free free trade club deal on Dexos 2 oil, it should be around £60 for 4 x 5 litres of very good oil that is 505.01 approved. If push comes to shove, say you are a taxi driver.

Quantum Lognlife III 5W30, that's what the Audi use so why would you want anything else, and it is 507 00 spec.

Just ordered the top tensioners from Audi as TPS where only £6 more expensive and I'd of had to drive over to them to pay upfront, £310 including both gaskets for the covers, I feel robbed
