Not sure there is much real world difference in running costs TBH, and you would always wish you had gone for the 4.2

That D3 looks nice for the money though

Ignore the comedy 'top spec' claim on the D3 - it's pretty much poverty Sport spec and being an early car it doesn't have 4 zone climate

Depends what you want from it - they're very different cars to drive

Default Update

Thanks Briang9, I'm glad a didn't waste the journey to look at the S8!

Sticking to the larger engines seems the way forward, with that in mind is the 'Swirl Flap' issue so prevalent that a 4.0 TDI is a complete no. no?

Many thanks again for all the help and advice, it is very much appreciated!

Hi,

No I haven't yet! Family circumstances mean I have very little time generally so I'm trying to gather as much advice as possible so I can focus on something specific and make the best of limited time.

Thanks again!

Yeah 4.0 TDI doesnt have a great reputation, personally I would stick with petrol if I were you, legislation etc is only going to get tougher on diesel cars IMHO

I've had a 2.8 and two S8s, all three doing similar trips. I didn't take a lot of notice with the MPG on the 2.8, but the DIS average was around 24/25 (and we all know that the DIS is optimistic!). I've been really OCD with MPG on my current S8 and have logged every tank full over all my tears of ownership (4 or 5 I think). That does a 'real' MPG of 21 to 22 unless I start pootling around town a lot.

So, if you want an '8, IMHO, go for what you'd really enjoy - a couple of MPG here or there isn't going to be a big factor in the running costs.

Only picked up on this just now. Lurgan is about 30 min from me. I'm in the area at least once a week on business so could call in and look if interested.
I've got obdeleven which will give a reasonably compehensive readout of any issues.

I've had a FL S8, then a PF S8 and now a PF D3 4.2 sport.

The FL S8 is the one I miss actually, though the D3 is a much more modern car and I don't think the 4.2 sport is far removed from the performance of the D2 S8 it never feels quick. It's fast, it's comfy and the toys are great but I still miss the FL S8.

The PF S8 was cheap and it was quite nice, but it wasn't a patch on the FL and yeah that glass was irritating as to get a good GPS signal i had to put my stereo's antenna through the sun roof. The gearbox died and wouldn't come back to life. It had servicing paperwork too. MY FL did 230ish on the first gearbox without being touched (and i did 100k of those). Mine had a prins LPG and that worked great. It eventually threw valves into pistons as I think the timing chain jumped in the variable timing - i'd replaced both over the years and I think that's a minor weakness in the FL D2

The D3 seems to have improved the reliablity with gearbox and engine. Though i've heard bad things about the 4.0TDI and given current governmental thoughts on Diesel i'd avoid it even more. My 4.2 petrol is good on a long run getting late 20s to early 30s but short runs are late teens to early 20s, though that's better than either S8 was!

Default NI

Hi Ameiseuk,

Many thanks for the offer, very much appreciated!

As much as I like the look of the car, realistically, it looks like I'm not now going to be able to make a trip to NI in the near future!

Thanks again
