Default Warm up time on a 4.0 TDI

After years of driving petrol Audi V8s, I recently switched to a 4.0 TDI. So far it's been a good experience, but I am wondering how long these engines normally take to war up? Yesterday, I had to drive for about 10 miles and 17 minutes before the guage reached 90C whereas my petrol A8s were at normal temperature fairly quickly even when it is freezing outside. I also do not recall other diesel cars taking such a long time to warm up.

Is this normal behaviour for a 4.0 TDI or do I have a lazy thermostat or something?

Do you have a Webasto supplementary heater?
If you're not sure, look for a regulatory sticker on the underside of the bonnet. If you have, it may be worth checking this is running from cold starts, the diesel exhaust outlet is in the plastic sump tray and should issue a light smoke you can see easily with a torch at night.
My 3.0V6TDI is also too slow to warm up, tried two thermostats and later today will try another temp sender.

Modern diesels are a nightmare to warm up... Our XC90 takes about a week (or so it feels).

Maybe I haven't been observant enough driving other diesels, but this one seemed to take a long time. Having said that, I've no experience of an XC90 diesel.

My car does have a Webasto sticker, so I'll have a look as you suggest. Perhaps there will also be a fault code if that is not operating.

Yes, it has quite good diagnostics and if it registers a fault, such as over temp will lock out for safety until an adaptation of value 01 is done to a certain channel (07 IIRC)
