Default Could electric roads spark a green transport revolution?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/storie...ort-revolution

Quote:
Specially adapted trucks in Germany are being tested on electric roads.

Power is fed directly to the vehicles from overhead power cables.

It's costly - but could cut carbon emissions.

They talk about this like it's a new idea. It seems to me we've gone full-circle.

Trolleybus anyone?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolleybus

Personally I think trolleybuses are a much better solution than trams. Trams are a stupid idea. Manchester spent millions digging up roads and laying tracks to bring back trams. And whenever they need to extend a route, they disrupt local traffic and spend millions more to lay new tracks. And when there's an accident or a road closure that affects a section of track, the whole tram network can be disrupted because trams obviously can't take a diversion. Trolleybuses with more overhead lines would've been less expensive to implement and much more flexible, especially if the trolleybuses had been hybrids or used batteries to enable them to drive without overhead lines for short distances.

Now that is a great idea; I wonder if it was ever tried before - wouldn't surprise me.
Nowadays though it could be so much cleverer; the batteries could be used very effectively to provide short power bursts for moving off, hills, etc. while the overhead wires provide what would effectively be a "trickle charge".
And the power cables could also be used by local delivery vehicles etc.

You mean like the vehicles fitted with coal gas bags for fuel during WW1

Mind you, arcing from the pantograph and gas bags on the roof might not be the best solution

That's a good idea

And given that the present infrastructure of underground electric cables is probably already being pushed to the limit in some towns and cities, overhead cables could be tapped into at regular intervals to provide electric vehicle charging points too.

The only real downside I can see is that overhead cables are a little unsightly, but I think that's a small price to pay.

A bag of highly flammable gas. Love it! Nothing could possibly go wrong with that

Seriously though, while that looks neater than overhead cables, it's not very practical. Since it's not out of reach, it would need to be low voltage, which means high current (= lots of arcing, volt-drop and burnt-out contacts). And when the local utilities suppliers dig up that section of road, which they will inevitably and frequently do, it will no doubt affect entire sections of track.

I'd start with aviation industry
Create a plane that will fly between the Europe and the US on a single battery charge.
After that all other problems will be solved automatically.

Or, use the latest, ultra-safe nuclear reactor technology to power them:
