Default MMI DVD drive issues

Aside from the DPF sender issues I am having with my car I have started to have problems with the Navigation again.

A few months ago the drive stopped reading disks, I sourced a replacement laser and fitted it which resolved the issue for a while but it has returned again now. My Nav seem to work fine from cold but after an hour or two starts to have issues reading the disc, so I am assuming it is heat related.

I'm not sure if:
  • I have been unlucky
  • The replacement laser was of questionable quality
  • my copy of the DVD is dodgy
  • it is an non-laser fault with my drive

I know I can burn another new DVD and I could replace the laser again but I am tempted to just swap the drive over.

VCDS tells me my current one is HW: 4E0 919 887 C, do I need an exact replacement or will any 2G MMI drive work? i.e. 4E0 035 144 K

Will I have issues with Component Protection with the drive if I swap it over?

Thanks guys

Paul

Is you disk an original - copies are notoriously difficult to get to work.

Either way, try another disk before you give up

It's a copy but MMI disks are not usually an issue I believe, its RNS-E that causes problems with copy protection?

Also I have tried an older original DVD which diplays the same symptoms, but is also very out of date

even on the mmi 2G you can get issues using copied disks, few times ive had a disk failures due to the copied disk.

def try another first

The servo worm gear that moves the laser back and forth can wear causing the laser to mistrack, if this happens repeatedly over several revolutions, it will cause problems. If you want another DVD, PM me your address and I can post one. Good luck.
