New caliper time.

My calipers are painted black, that'll equal a couple of hundred extra pounds from Audi!

Are all S8 rear calipers the same?

Howdy Duffy, you may say that in jest but that's exactly what Audi do, charge you twice the price for an S8 one because they paint it black! I checked with A8 Parts when I had to replace one of mine and they confirmed they're the same so I bought an A8 one for £300 instead of paying £600 for an S8 one. I'm quite capable of painting it with some black paint when I get the chance to do so

So if you do end up buying one don't let them tell you otherwise, the A8 calliper will fit your S8

There was no jest! I'm hoping that, as suggested, a parking brake motor is available seperately, but yes if push comes to shove, some gloss black high temp will come out to play!

The ECU for the EPB can also play up and cause many faults, so if noting else resolves it then take a look at that. Second hand ones are about £150 so god knows how much a new Audi one is!

The motor can be separated, so worth popping it off and having a look inside.

How complicated can a hall sensor be?

It looks like one connector and 2 bolts, I'll update this once I'm in there!

For info, I queried Murrays direct, who I use very regularly, they could do a pukka TRW black S8 caliper for £268 plus the VAT as an exchange. The parking brake on it's own is £250 plus VAT so a bit of a no brainer here.

Audi price £607 plus VAT for exactly the same part.

The fault hasn't come back today so I'll keep a watching brief on this one!

I've had the implausible signal and pads worn since I bought my D3 15 months ago, since the pads are ok the conclusion is that the pads were changed but then the EPB not calibrated. The ECU believes the pads should be worn, but is getting signals from the EPB that are not in line with what the ECU expects.

I did the VCDS calibration several times on Monday thinking that would be the issue but it took a couple of runs before the fault decided to clear itself, I'm going to strip the motor and caliper and give it a look if it's still showing as an intermittent fault tomorrow.

If you leave your EPB switched off when you park the car then lock it, it normally forces your rear parking brakes on both sides to do a quick on/off each side to calibrate themselves. Give that a try and see if it works.
