My 2001 S8 had what I thought was a rather low level of PAS so I had the fluid or treacle after a decades work changed. Worked a small miracle. Much lighter consistent and feelsome. The only downside is I have to go to the gym for my work out now.

Hopefully it will be something as cheap as that.

There should be a servotronic valve fitted to the rack, it is possible it is faulty

Didn't have much time to check at the weekend. Is the power steering fluid reservoir the one with the green lid in the picture below (pic nicked off the internet - not my car)?

If that is the one, there were two markers on the side - fluid is about 3/4 inch above the lower marker.

The first thing to do, as has been mentioned is a fluid flush and change. Follow this guide.

I have only used the Audi/VW fluids, but has anyone had luck using other forms of hydraulic fluid/oil on this system?

I use universal ATF or auto transmisison fluid on my USDM vehicles, but on my Honda, only the Honda stuff, as it's picky, and I've been told they fail if you don't use the Honda fluid.

I'd also like to "upgrade" to a full synthetic fluid, but not if it's going to start leaking. (I have zero leaks now, and only just 75,000 miles on my 2001 S8.)

I plan on replacing all the hose clamps too, as I just noticed that they are loose, and have minimal leaks, just like my first D2 A8 did. (And those leaks stopped when I replaced the crimp type clamps with screw type clamps.)
