Guy has the name "Daviesbike" on this forum and is based just south of Swindon.
Suggest that you PM him to make arrangements. I have travelled from Wigan a few times to see him for different jobs. I have a few really good indies in my local area but SWMBO and I think that nearly three hours drive each way and fuel used is well worth the consistent good results. We have a major update due and will shortly be heading down there to fulfill our wishes but plan on hotel overnight to give Guy the required time to complete. Where are you?

I think you are right, first checked on my iPhone and it came up with a small village next to Birmingham. Then Googled on laptop and yes, better drive down to Glasgow...

Distance and motorway all the way to Glasgow seems better but Mackies are all cars whilst Guy is an A8 owner.
There is another like Mackies in Bristol, also easy to reach but again all cars. Just a matter of personal choice. We were at a concert in Colne a couple of weeks back, hope we see you on one of our meets.

Wait a minute - Mackies is an authorised ZF gearbox specialist and have been in business for years. I've done the tour and had my gearbox serviced there a couple of times - they're serious experts. Much as I respect Guy and his undoubted skills, just because he owns an '8 doesn't make him better than Mackies.

Ooops!!
Complete misunderstanding. I was not decrying Mackie's or any other. I was trying to say that with Guy it is a one stop for anything A8. When I'm in Swindon Guy manages to sort any and all other niggles that mine is suffering from at the same time, without the stealer prices. Hope that clarifies my point.

No misunderstanding from me Ray - we're just openly sharing our experiences of where we've had good service from good suppliers, which is what the forum should be about. I've never used Guy for this work, though I obviously know him well and respect him, whereas I'd wholeheartedly recommend Mackies from experience (like Jim).
I suspect both would do a good job in this instance - I personally went for Mackies based on the recommendation here, a less than perfect experience with Chester Transmissions beforehand, and - probably most importantly - the 3 year 100k warranty on the gearbox rebuild offered by them |
