The cars store the fault codes unless you tell it to clear them; if you get the full fault code log it should give you the date, time and tell you if it's still detected or not. It's unlikely the new sensor is duff, that'd be pretty harsh luck if it is; chances are the fault code just needs clearing. If you have the necessary tools to do so clear the code and see if it comes back or not.
