Default Broken part puzzle

Clue: It's an engine bay part (D2 S8).

Anyone recognise them?

Or are more clues needed?

I can tell you where (approximately) in the engine bay the parts came from (or rather, where they were found) but presently I have no idea what they do/did.

Locating pins for the inlet manifold - one on each bank. They hold the manifold gasket in place and guide the manifold itself in to place on its locating dowels.

They usually snap when the manifold comes off as its almost impossible to lift it straight up with the engine in the car, plus if you don't know about them you don't know not to slide it.

Part number is 078 103 251.

And this is what they're supposed to look like, so you have some headless nylon screws in holes somewhere around your manifold.

I knew you'd know what they were MJ!

Hmmm, so hopefully not too important then?

The story is, I had my inlet manifold replaced yesterday (I had a complete 'new old' manifold that I bought ages ago). There wasn't really anything wrong with the existing manifold but I had been plagued with an oily stink for ages, which turned out to be the valley cover gasket, so the manifold had to come off to get to it. The mechanic seems to have done a great job but he gave those parts to me afterwards, assuming they'd fallen out of the old manifold. Presumably they just 'aid' initial alignment and (since they've managed to fit the new manifold without them), they're not needed?

Yet another failed attempt to ask a question that MJ can’t answer!
