Default A8 ZF Gearbox servicing

Hi everyone,

After many many enquirers via PM on this i would like to just shed some light.

Yes we do indeed offer full transmission servicing and we use the same equipment as Mackies In Glasgow

We can update the software and change from Lifeguard 6 to lifeguard 8 and do the firmware update ect

This is not a plug for advertising but as we are an independent A8 Specialist it seems the right thing to do after we seem to spend most of our time fixing other Garages " Mess ups " When servicing the gear box.

The latest one was a 3.0TDI that was serviced by another garage and under filled by 3 Liters and had the incorrect filter fitted compared to what should have been fitted,

Most filters look very similar but the pick up pipes can differ by only 10mm and this is enough to starve the gearbox when cold.

If you are anywhere near Mackies and its closer for you to go to Glasgow then i Highly Highly recommend Mackies as we work very close with them and they provide us will all our software for doing updates ect and are very nice bunch of Guy's

Quite a lot of you forum Guy's already use us anyway but for those who have not and are thinking of doing your transmission then this may or may not help,

Hoping to move back to England later next year, so I'm sure my '8 will be paying you a visit Guy. I get my gearbox serviced every couple of years or so now (around every 30K miles) as I think it's money well spent to look after it.

What would the price for a 3.0tdi service i.e flush and new filter and change to life guard 8 with software update end up costing? If you don't mind me asking

With personal experience of Guy's work I can vouch for him.
For me it is quite a drive to Swindon but I think after the three times that I have had Guy rescue me it has been well worth the effort.
When I told my mate about him his answer was "It is only diesel and time"
This service is ideal and needed for those of us that are no longer good with the spanners.

Petrol and time for those of us who run their cars on proper fuel ... but good point

It would be the best part of 200 miles each way for me, but I do sometimes stay near Swindon on my regular trips to Southampton.

Just wondering Guy ... roughly how long would a full transmission service (on a D2 S8) take you and/or do you provide a courtesy car (preferably a large one, of the four rings variety)?

Thanks Guys

There is no difference in cost on the D3 strangly other than W12 and S8 "due to exhaust system being in the way of the sump "

So everything in D3 range Barr the above is a flat rate of £450 including vat and parts + labour that includes filter/strainer 10L of lifeguard 6 sump gasket. Sump plug. O-ring seals. And of course the flush and change of fluid.
Sump bolts are £1.76 each should any need replacing and we stock plenty.

More crucial is having a photo of the green zf plaque so that the correct filter is used "correct pick up length ect"

Regarding D2. The price is the same. And service is the same
"And in the rare event that a D2 W12 was in it would be a tad more in the labour department "

Lifeguard 8 fluid is sadly more expensive. But more importantly not every zf 6 speed box can superseed to life guard 8.
Iirc there are arround 25 types of box that are able to use life guard 8 following an ecu firmware flash.

Another reason it's essential to have a picture of the gearbox plaque

As for curtacy car. Yes we have a 2011 golf " of the recently non compliant soot chucking variety "

And a 2010 Golf 1.6 tdi.

Sadly no large A8s however I am considering a D2 as a curtacy car in the not to distant future "due to the age it will however be subject to your own insurance unlike the golfs"

Time wise we recommend that it's with us a day from 9am -4-5pm ..but of course we would call as soon as it's ready and been valeted and ready to go.

My car suffers from the known hooting on low down torque, from what I read it was cured by lifeguard 8 and the ecu flash, what would be my next port of call if it doesn't take lifeguard 8? Im guessing the noise is in fact the lockup clutch slipping?

Mark, You only think that you are using "proper fuel", but remember my "oil burner" stayed with you on our recent run.

What about a trip to Dortmund, ZF wizards over there
They take the brain out of GB for clean
....Damn why ZF service is so expensive, compering to 7g box on merc (136 quid for all service parts from dealer and 50 quid labour)
I remeber I had my 7 series GB serviced for less then 300 quid
I'm not surprised not many owner service ZF boxes

It certainly did! Despite our best efforts, we couldn't lose you!
