It is indeed a blue block but has 8 connectors (all used).
It clips to green and yellow blocks (both 6-connector, what are they for?) to make a larger 20-connector block that I was told on some VAG cars is a single lump.

Maybe when the weather is warmer I'll peel back some tape and check the wirring colours at the DIN, as well as get the multimeter out.

The 8 cables are:
(row1) purple,brown/black,salmon(orangey-pink)
(middle row)yellow/black,green
(row3)red,blue/white,brown/white
though I think that's actually upside down to when plugged into the RNS.

The other connectors on that run are usually for stuff like a phone kit (mic in, etc) if it's there on the stereo as it's a standard connection set.

There are also adaptors around to convert the DIN socket to other CD changers.

Well I don't have ElsaWin but I do have a Bentley Manual so I fired that up for the first time in ages.
It's a US one obviously and doesn't cover RNS-D but the Symphony(?) wiring for the CD looked pretty similar once I found it. Also gives the pinouts.

The 8 into 10 trick seems to be totally down to shield/ground connectors so should be easy to resolve if I ever go down the route of connecting behind the boot side panel.
One of the 8-way plug connectors seems to provide a shield for 2 signal wires and one ground (also used as a shield) seems to come via the adjacent green connector. Seems a bit odd but it all adds up.

i am bringing this up to life as i am at the same point, have just bought a USB/SD adapter that connects where the CD changer is, and i want to leave it in the boot.

However i am stuck with the 8 pin round connector and i don't know how to match the wires between the above and the blue connector...have you sorted out in the end?

been looking for diagrams on web but there is nothing consistent, i guess it differs from brand to brand...

thanks.

I've got a diagram somewhere of the CD connector in the boot. The ones I found online had in most cases the same error, though it was only for power.
I've tapped into that cable in the boot to get power for a TV aerial amplifier, well to be precise in the fly-lead on the CD changer.
I'll see if I can find it......

Edit: Here you go, the corrected version.......
I can't remember which way round that is, but as not every pin is wired and it's not symmetric you'll soon figure it out with the wiring exposed.

well...i bought this cable which seems to be what i need in order to couple the interface with the original CD changer cable that goes to the back of the RNS-D, i hope it will work.

That's the long cable that runs from the back of the RNS all the way to the boot (to the CD changer), as it says "For vehicles without existing CD Change Wiring" it's for when you don't have one. Not sure that's what you want....

yeah, i know that is the one, but it has the connection made between the 8 pin DIN connector and the blue mini 8 pin ISO connector that goes on the back of the RNS-D. So, the DIN connector goes into the one where CD changer plugs in now and the mini ISO will be bridged with an adapter to the other mini ISO one that came with the USB/SD adapter i bought.

That's how i envisaged it, hopefully it will work.

Otherwise, is it easy to simply run the cable from the back of RNS-D into the glovebox without having to dismantle half of the car? In the RS6 C5 that i have it was quite doable and easy, but i couldn't see any hole/gap in the D2 going from the RNS-D to the glovebox.

I am also now contemplating with the idea of upgrading to RNS-E, having it in the RS6 i am so used to it and really love it, way better than the RNS-D, especially the 2012 model that i have which is faster and has a better screen resolution than the previous RNS-E generation, however after reading IT's DIY is no where as easy as it was on the C5 and definitively wouldn't want to dismantle the whole car for that

Of course, I did that for my first install of my XcarLink which just sat in the glovebox. I'm in the (rather drawn-out) process of relocating it to the cubby hole by the drivers knees along with some other kit.

It's a bit tight to feed it through over the top of the trim at the right of the glovebox, but not that difficult with the RNS popped out so you can reach both sides. Probably easier if you take the glovebox out first which is a quick job, though I didn't bother for that (though I did to change the light bulb which is almost impossible otherwise).

Biggest problem I found was that when the glovebox closes it squashes the cable between the right edge and the roof.
