I guess really I just want to make sure Guy doesnt make an impulse buy on a car that isnt exactly what he wants. I got the impression that the W12 left him wanting for a few more toys and trimmings after he got it.

The 4.2 FSI is a rare car - Thats because most people want the Diesels by the facelift age. To those like me and Guy that value a petrol, might as well leverage their unpopularity to their buying advantage.

Just because its the cheapest one there, doesnt mean its a good price.

Ive been watching S6's now for 3 weeks. The cheapest advertised is £13500, with most being 14 or 15K +. Only two have gone to auction on Ebay, 1 with sensible miles, nice spec and colour making only 10.5K, and another starting at 12.5K got no bids.

That puts the value of S6's around 11K in my eyes, maybe 12 from a dealer. And for that reason, I've not bought one yet, as everyones asking stupid money for them.

My point is - Pay what you need to, not what is being asked for.

Agreed. Guy, just a small point you cannot convert the FSi engine to LPG if that was your intention. Fine if not of course!

Good point. Forgot about that - You *can* convert them now, but they are in their infancy and costs more than a regular conversion.

Prins started doing one late last year....

http://prinsautogasuk.co.uk/PrinsVSI/VSIDI.html

This is why you dont see any of Audi V10s converted - Yet

Fair enough if that is the logic.

It's a rare car, but I don't believe it always works like this in the marketplace. Using a source that I use for vehicle disposals I have access to information on Autotrader that is not on the public site, such as how long a car has been advertised for and it is always the diesel A8s that have been out there for the longest--one of them for more than 400 days. That dealer might need to consider voluntary liquidation soon. The popularity or unpopularity of cars is beside the point, what matters is how many serious buyers there are for a car at any time--one is normally enough. The Ferrari 250 GTO is 'unpopular', but you'd struggle to leverage that to your buying advantage.

Maybe. This is a fine theory, but not a realistic strategy if you need to buy a car or an Audi S6 in particular. The Ebay auction results are largely irrelevant--that's just not the way to sell an Audi S6 and anyone who really sells such cars through eBay auctions gets the price they want with a shill bid here and there.

As for Guy's new A8, here is another example. The following A8 sold in BCA Bleckbushe last week for a bit over £5k: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170869701539. By the time the dealer paid auction fees, got it transported, and covered his costs he probably paid £5,500. That car was cheap because it was privately entered and didn't go through at the proper time (the seller might have reason to be irritated). If Guy had bought his car at auction it would probably have made around £8,500-9,000 so long as it had been entered by a good source. So he surely hasn't paid through the nose even if he paid the ticket price.

Now for an example of a diesel. This car made £8,600 at BCA Blackbushe towards the end of last year (October if my memory serves me correctly): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370625234901, so let's call it £9k after fees and transport. They first hit the market advertising this at £13k, gradually came down to £9k, and for reasons best know to themselves, have returned to £11k. £13k was competitve at the time, but they've still got it. Why? In part, it's because there are so many A8 diesels and if you want to sell them you need to be very competitve ... cheap. Dealers too often get stuck with them for months and make a loss or sell them quickly for barely enough to cover the cost of the trip to auction.

If dealers want to make money on A8s the best way to do it is ... buy a petrol and leverage their rarity to your selling advantage.

Or perhaps we are just "fooled by randomness".

MMMMM all very valid points from all sides of it but i have looked all over the Web to find a simmilar or higher spec than my W12 in a 4.2 with a facelift grill and i just cant find one ..... other wise i would go for that, but of course the other thing is that im part exchanging my W12 for a 4.2 and most of the time the 4.2 is worth less than the 12 so im the one asking for cash as well as a part exchange ? and so far 3 people i have asked have been very intrested and offered me up to 2k in return witch will pay for my LPG convertion ?

realisticly i would like ;

Quad zone
Keyless entry and start
mood lighting
Led lighting
Full blind package
19 or 20" wheels
adaptive cruse
sports interior and air ride
(option) rear entertainment

but i think im being too greedy and im not going to get all that in a 4.2 for less than 9-10k

if any one can find one then il snap there hands off for it

If its the right p/x deal, got all the spec you *need*, the mileage you need and in a colour you like - Crack on, and the price is less important. You are the 1 specialist customer, finding the specialist car that sutherland quite rightly refers to.

My theory is I will always comprimise on some of the above providing its cheap enough to sell on without really losing much money when I decide its not got x, or y is bugging me. If its missing simple things that can be retrofitted cheapish, again I can brush over that a bit.

Above all - You need to be sure its a keeper before you sink £2K into an LPG conversion.

Genuinely just want to see you in a car that your totally happy with, and I'm just getting a bit of a 'its the best I can find' vibe rather than a 'its perfect' - So, if you have managed to get it cheap, worst case, you dont lose so much if you have to move it on...

I do agree IT, and im quite fussy with what i want but at the end of the day i can be because its me thats got to live with the car i mean i found a decent spec one that has LPG all ready but its not a facelift http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-AUDI-...#ht_1772wt_932

wich is a shame because the spec is not bad at all

Ex forum members car....

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2411

It was good spec, nice colour...... You could always fit a facelift front end if the rest of it checked out....
