Default Squeaky steering wheel help

Hi All,

So 6 months in and I'm loving the S8 but it has a squeaky steering wheel. Like the sort of creak you get when opening a door slowly. Has it for most of any journey, worst when cold.

I've tried WD40 and silicon spray in the gap between where the wheel rotates on the column itself with no such luck.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is there another product I should look to use? Is there another component to spray/lube? Was thinking of taking the front cover off the wheel (although don't know how to do) and unleashing a can of silicon spray in there. Obviously don't want to trigger the airbag though!

Comments appreciated!

Have you tried moving the wheel on the electrics just to see if it helps, stops or just makes it worse?

Mine creaks when it's being adjusted but not in normal use so never bothered me. I notice A8 parts have one on offer at the moment for 42 beans.

Don't think you see a lot by pulling the wheel, i think you'll have to remove the plastics. EDIT: column surround not wheel

Disconnect the battery first and wait 20 minutes before you mess about with the steering wheel air bag.

This might help: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6386

An old thread, but I have fixed the squeak after a bit of Googling.

This is the guide I used >Audiworld Link<, hopefully the noise won't come back!

It appears to be the universal joint squeeking, or something further down where it goes through the bulkhead. Originally I thought it was coming from the column surround, how sound travels in cars!

Doesn't it just!

I had what I was sure was a sunroof rattle for a while. It was driving me insane (squeaks and rattles really, really irritate me!). When I could stand it no more, I asked Lyn to sit in the back while I looked for some pot-holed roads to drive over (not too difficult to find these days). Luckily she quickly found the source (and earned her place back in the front seat) ... parcel shelf, rattling just below the rear window. You'd have sworn it the noise was coming from the roof lining.
