Thank you all for the feedback, I will look for leaks and check the level in the box.

Could you confirm the correct gear is fluid, am I right in thinking it’s G052162A2?

That's my experience too. I had to specifically request a new F125 switch when Mackies rebuild my gearbox. They weren't going to change it until I asked. To be fair to them it may not be a common part/failure on other vehicles.

Car looks stunning by the way with it's black paintwork and FE wheels ... but then I'm biased

Correct - Mackies warranty is 100k/3 years (whichever comes 1st) on the 'box rebuild, and is subject to regular (2 years in my case) servicing: F125 switch isn't an automatic replace as part of the box rebuild, but they'd happily do that at the same time if asked.

Thank you all.

Never filled a gearbox on an S8 before, is it the type with a fill hole and you pump it in until it dribbles out?

As in 3 or 4 litres in the box and what should be 3 or 4 in the sump?

Finally whilst the old girl does look black in the photo she is in fact Ming Blue!

Yes thats it. Engine running and monitor the gearbox temp in VCDS. When it gets to 30C, take the large filler plug out and pump oil in until it dribbles out (this will usually cool it down a couple of degrees). Wait until 35C and when its stopped dripping, put the plug back in.

Its 9 litres total - 5 in the sump, 2 in the converter and a couple more in the gubbins of it. The point at which I've noticed they squeal is about 3 litres short, but tbh if its leaking you really need to pull the sump and re-seal it.

I've noticed that when the average grunt puts the sump back on they don't use a torque wrench and just heave on the bolts. This bends the sealing flange and crushes the gasket at which point it leaks everywhere. I have spent too many hours with a hammer and straight-edge fixing them Gaskets are cheaper on ebay than from TPS, and a smear of blue hylomar helps to make sure it seals up properly.

Sorry for the delay in any updates the weather has been against me recently and the old S4 daily driver needed some work doing.

So got the car up on ramps today and yes there has been some leaks from the gearbox, looks like the sump gasket to me and over time its lost some fluid.

Tried to fill the box with some new fluid to top it up, though I just could not get the car level on the drive, no matter how I had it.

Next step is I will take it to a good local garage and just have them do a gearbox service. Should tick the box of the gasket replacement, new filter and get some new fluid into there.

On the plus side I serviced the S8 at the same time.

It still amazes me how good value TPS is for Quantum oil, brilliant oil and I simply would not use anything else these days. New oil, Mann filter and the engine sounds like its had 50,000 miles knocked off it.

Well I decided it was not going to beat me so had another go today, got the car flatter and managed to get 1.5 litres into the box.

Only trouble is of course it gets warm as you do it so you lose the "Temperature Window" and it gets too hot after 10 minutes or so.

Anyway, got some fluids into it and it without doubt the noise has gone so I shall repeat again in the coming weeks just to make sure we have the correct level.

Its a horrible job mind you without a lift to do it!

Interestingly managed to upset my G85 steering sensor, no idea how but it lit the dash up like a Christmas tree and no longer was friends with the ECU. Had to login and recode it and all seems well again!

Most odd, never mind the box seems happier now and the S8 is all service but Audi PLEASE could you fit dipsticks for your gearboxes!

I know, that was a master stoke right there Audi!

How many great D2s would still be on the road if they had only put a gearbox service into the maintenance schedule.

Then again, if you do not life a car not many people would go an buy a new one would they.

Sorry Audi, I did not get the memo so I will just keep buying the old ones
