Real shame that, as the feature list was excellent!
Damn! There must be someone out there doing them...will have to do some digging

The factory tow pack on the Volvo does this (and gives you separate indicator indications too (should test the bulb warning!).
I suspect the D2 factory trailer loom would have done this too, but as they're NLA and unobtainium, I'll never find out...
Actually, even a toggle switch would do - is there a wire I can interrupt near the dash?
The factory harness does indeed have a function for this. The 13-pin Euro socket has a switch in it which disables the car's own rear fog light (in favour of the one on the trailer) and turns off the PDC when a plug is inserted. Its a single wire in to the PDC module in the boot, I forget which pin. If you have a 7-pin socket I'm not sure how you would do it automatically.

Don't know about folding rear seats. If you want to carry huge things get a minivan
There is a very good reason for that big metal plate behind the rear seats I'm sure.
I bet its something structural, giving the body more strength from the side and extra protection from the rear.
We should be grateful we have it

How dare you, a minivan??!!

I know what you’re saying, it’d be less rigid. It would be louder too, I’m sure, with noise entering from the rear. Maybe you’ve convinced me...

And additionally on the D3, it locks the air suspension in towing mode, so it wont automatically drop down at motorway speeds and risk scrubbing your jockey wheel...

RS6 saloon has fold down rear seats. I would have assumed the same concerns as you over rigidity and noise, but it was really a complete non event. Very solid and quiet in deed.

I would only hypothesise the A8 never got them due to the ally construction requiring the extra cross strength for some reason.

Though thinking about it, when I cut out the (partially pre-cut) panel to fit my ski hatch the material was pretty thin and as soft as toffee!
The felt material covering that behind-the seat panel in the boot is now back in place, but I don't recall noticing any serious structural/bracing clues on it's rather large flat surface.

To cut through the aluminium I used an oscillating tool similar to those used to cut plaster casts off limbs, it took literally moments to do.

The central seat belt on facelift D2s being a lap/diagonal type will obviously require significant strength in the upper mounting, presumably from a cross-member and/or the parcel shelf?

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Maybe they thought that fold-down seats were too 'low class' for such a vehicle.
