Default Car Misbehaving

Car has started to jerk when putting my foot down, like its hesitating. Only does it when you floor it and not if you build the revs up slowly.

Had the code read today and have come up with the following, some of which were listed in the book and some weren't.

Could anybody help with the codes that weren't listed and also with opinions on what you think the problem may be.

Ive spoke to a few people (mechanics) who reckon it could be something to do with the Mass flow meter.

codes as follows:

17538?
17536 - system too lean bank 1
17545?
17549?
17547?
16486 - mass or volume air flow low input
18265?
01578?

Thanks

Adam

17538/P1130 - Fuel Trim; Bank 2 (Mult): System too Lean

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active

Possible Causes
Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor faulty
Oxygen Sensor Control faulty
Oxygen Sensor(s) faulty
Fuel Injector(s) faulty

Possible Solutions
Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
Check Oxygen Sensor Control
Check Oxygen Sensor(s)
Check Fuel Injector(s)

Check Oxygen Sensor(s)
Check Fuel Injector(s)

17545/P1137/004407 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Rich

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active

Possible Causes
Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor faulty
Fuel Pressure Regulator faulty
Fuel Injector(s) faulty
Oxygen Sensor Control faulty
Oxygen Sensor(s) faulty
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System faulty

Possible Solutions
Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

Vacuum Lines faulty

Possible Solutions
Check Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) OR Manifold Pressure Sensor (G71)
Check Vacuum Lines
Check Engine Operating Conditions => Meas. Blocks

Special Notes
Uwe: I think this code is set when the airflow being measured (or otherwise calculated) by the ECU doesn't make sense given other operating parameters such as RPM and throttle opening, manifold pressure, etc.

17547/P1139/004409 - Fuel Trim: Bank 2 (Add): System too Rich

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active

Check Oxygen Sensor Control
Check Oxygen Sensor(s)
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System

16486/P0102/000258 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF/G70): Signal too Low

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
Loss of Power

Possible Causes
Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF/G70) faulty
Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF/G70) faulty

Possible Solutions
Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF/G70)
Check/Replace Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF/G70)

18265/P1857/006231 - Load Signal: Error Message from ECU

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active

Possible Causes
Fault Code(s) stored in Engine Control Unit (ECU)

Possible Solutions
Check Engine Control Unit for Fault Code(s)

All points towards mass air flow sensor. I would try to clean it out and then replace it if it doesn't resolve things, also check your vacuum lines for leaks/holes wherever you can on the engine.

its important to only use a proper MAF sensor cleaner or electrical contact cleaner as anything else could affect readings - something like THIS or Electrical Contact Cleaner from maplins as an alternative

Before cleaning anything do a log of your MAF reading g/s from VCDS together with RPM at idle and when driving around. This should tell you if the MAF is faulty.
Lambdas usually have their own unique code so perhaps its not them.

I cleaned mine twice in Isopropyl aclohol left overnight with the metal element submersed in Isopropyl overnight in a little plastic bag. Make sure it is competely dry before putting back into car and starting. You can get it from Maplins it comes in a big spray can.
I also went a bit over the top and gently brushed the exposed metal element with a glassfibre brush (for cleaning electronics before soldering). This is to try to clean any oxidised deposits on the element surface. The MAF worked fine after this cleaning procedure and lasted around 4 years until it was stolen.
Here is my old error read out resulting from a bad MAF. I also had 1 bad lambda sensor.

5 Faults Found:
17539 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B2 S1: Internal Resistance too High
P1131 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17538 - Fuel Trim; Bank 2 (Mult): System too Lean
P1130 - 35-00 - -
17536 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean
P1128 - 35-00 - -
16485 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Implausible Signal
P0101 - 35-00 - -
17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Rich
P1137 - 35-00 - -
Readiness: 0010 0101

And I aslo had the same load error for the ABS brakes and Auto Trans:
Address 03: ABS Brakes
and
Address 02: Auto Trans

1 Fault Found:
18265 - Load Signal: Error Message from ECU
P1857 - 35-00 - -

Cheers for the info guys its going into a mates for him to have a look on Wednesday, I did try cleaning it with electrical cleaner but no joy.

Also when you give it some the traction control light and ABS light come on together and then go off when you let off, only when you really give it some.

The guys at A8 Parts have a Mass flow air meter but its covered nearly the same amount of miles as mine so may just get one from TPS or Smith Knight Fay.

Thanks again

If you have to use SKF, then they're normally happy to discount list prices on parts (c.20%)

Been to a mates who owns Wabtec Developments VW/Audi Specialist in Manchester this morning, we've cleaned the mass air flow sensor again and touch wood that seems to have solved the problem.

Gave it a good run and it doesn't seem to be doing it.

Its going back in tomorrow morning to have the gearbox oil drained and changed also the filter. Thought it best to get this done seeing as its on 117,000 and not been done.

Make sure the gearbox gets a good 'flush' too, otherwise you could be just stirring up the 'gunge' and inviting problems. The garage needs to have the famous 'sucky, squirty, whatever it is' gizzmo that's been mentioned here a few times
