Interesting point about joe public. Am I the only one who feels that their D2 s8 gets more looks and - positive - comments now than when I bought it three years ago (or am I just looking for this? )

I think the shape is absolutely classic, and there are a couple of other factors not really mentioned above that I think contribute to classic status:

1. I'd say it was the car that signified Audi's ambition to move into a different league - e.g.
- first "limo" quality car to compete with Mercedes (as was....),
- first V8 (but correct me on this one if not right)
- a link to the R8 (4.2 V8 when launched)

2. Unbelievable build quality, and unity of design - every other car I've every stepped into doesn't compare, regardless of price.

As others have noted, I don't think current prices are relevant. My other car is a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo (future classic too, tho' I'm sure I'll get comments about that), and I could have bought a decent one of these today for about £600....

Nearly, the first luxury limo that I can remember was the 'Audi V8' what I like to call the D1. I shouldn't have read this thread, makes me miss the D2, haven't seen any here in Mexico, yet!

Amar is right, the Audi V8 (D1 chassis) was the first luxury car but I would still class it as a luxury saloon as opposed to a Limousin.

From Wikipedia
The Audi V8 (Typ 4C) is a large luxury four-door, five-seat saloon (sedan), built by Audi AG at its Neckarsulm plant in Germany from October 1988 to November 1993,[1] as the company's range-topping flagship model. It was the first car from the Audi marque to use its namesake engine configuration - a V8 engine, and first Audi car to combine quattro system with an automatic transmission.[3]
Factory production commenced in October 1988, and ceased in November 1993,[1] although sales of completed vehicles continued in 1994.[4][5]

i totally understand that about the understeer corrected with exessive power to the rear and allthough not a v8 the mk 2 escort with its implanted na calibra based engine on twin webbers 365 rwhp on full song it is amazing and gives me goose bumpes every time it comes out to play its fully rally preped and runs so close to det that if it was not run on 115octain it would not even do 1 mile before going bang not many people of this day and age can feel the difference in an ageing classic and a not to distant soon to be classic but they are both indeed the kind of car's that tick's all the boxes even my v1 wrx sti that was running close to 500bhp was a hand full and could get the tail out no problem but for some reason im always drawn back to the Audi it just seams such better build quality and has plenty of power when needed but you can still take your mother shopping in it and not feel silly im not quite sure where i am going with this but yes it should be a classic but in a different category its hard to compare the A8/S8 with the likes of the mk2, sunbeams, tigers ect..

Folks, just my 2p worth but the D2 is one heck of a good looking motor! For 'classic' status ever to occur, looks are a biggie.

The D3 and all those cars with that top to bottom grille treatment are (IMHO) pot ugly!

Davies bike, nice post I think but I'd find it easier to read if you used conventional punctuation and grammar.

But if that's all you've got available, hey! You can only play with the cards you're dealt!

A pal of mine, Fred, another Tigger driver, had an original 'Audi V8'. He really liked it. Had a big ol' flat bonnet and was painted a kind of medium blue metallic. Must have been a D1? It was never going to be any sort of future classic, but I don't think I've ever seen another.

I think the contributions and sharing of information is a lot more important to this forum than the grammar and punctuation Simon - enthusiasm better than criticism et all. . .

Its not just Guy to be fair. A lot of people forget to use proper puncuatuation/grammar and instead use text speak on the forum. It does make it harder to read and make it look a lot more messy. We should all do the basics, sentences and capital letters etc...

I have only had people comment or do a double take on two cars I have owned, one was the Fiat Coupe and the current S8, both classic designs I think, but maybe the Coupe looks a tad dated now? but still marvellous IMHO

How you spelling punctu whatsit there Amar?
