Three months seems to be a magic number, if you look at the "used car" demos on audi.co.uk you will see some say "Available from xxth of February" - they can't just sell immediately which I suspect is ties into a discount level from the manufacturer.

The latter I'm pretty sure.

Wasn't the case with the D2 or D3, but some Audi numpty has definitely forced the dealers hand to get D4's out the door.

The result, as far as I can see, is that 90% of them are poverty cars in bland and unimaginative colour combinations, sold at a discount to get people interested. 5 years on, this is also what the second hand market looks like as you know.

There are so many options available now, and not cheap ones either, that speccing up an A8 would be a lottery for the dealer as to whether they'd get that money back, so they'll spec it low, make their quotas & avoid getting stuck with something expensive and 'exciting'

Didn't this all start with the D2 FE

Talking to the dealer they seem to get a "budget" for a demo spec, but they always play the "safe" options - hence we end up with a load of clone spec cars. If it was me, I'd spec some colour just to stand out from the crowd (night blue and emerald black don't count as colour in my eyes). There are a couple of dealers that stand out, Lake District Audi seem to have had some "interesting spec A8s advertised, exclusive colours/leather etc.

They get registered, taxed and loaned out (staff or customers) for a while and ultimately sit on the forecourt depreciating. Then they tout in a variety of ways (once I got a spam type email with a "great PCP offer" for a pre-reg stock car - the irony being it was the car I had on my drive as a loaner at the time) until they get sold, in my experience often unseen by the buyer, at huge discount from RRP.

So I reckon if you could find a friendly dealer who has quota to fill they could be persuaded to spec more to your tastes, thus cutting the time it depreciates on their forecourt once it is 3 months old?
