The 5HP24A transmission differs from the 5HP24 by having an integrated front final drive/differential plus a Torsen II centre differential The Torsen ‘torque-sensing’ centre differential distributes the transmission’s output torque 50:50 between the front and rear axles ZF produced the 5HP24A exclusively for VW Audi, who refer to it as their ‘01L’ transmission. In total, ZF manufactured almost 100,000 of these 4WD transmissions, between May 1996 and May 2009 90% of production was for vehicles fitted with the 4.2 litre V8 engine i.e. the Audi A6 on the C5 platform (39,103 units) & Audi A8 on the D2 platform (47,629 units). The remainder was shared equally between the A8 quattro with the 165kW/480Nm 3.3L V8 TDI engine and the VW Phaeton 4motion/A8 quattro with the 309kW/550Nm 6.0 litre W12 engine To cover the vehicle range, ZF produced a total of 28 models of the transmission with 5 different front axle ratios (2.727, 2.909, 3.197, 3.511 & 3.730). By using different rear gearset ratios within the transmission, ZF were able to reduce the required number of rear axle ratios to only two (3.700 & 4.111). An unusual feature of the rear final drive is that, because of the driveline architecture, the axle rotates in the opposite direction to normal i.e. the crownwheel is on the RH side of the pinion, when viewed from the rear Although the transmission was mated to the mighty 6.0 litre W12 engine, this wasn’t the most potent combination The most powerful match for any 5HP24 transmission (including those used by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover) was for the 2004 Audi RS6 Plus, whose Cosworth-developed engine produced 353kW and 560Nm of torque.
