Default New purchase... 100mpg diesel!

Bought this little toy not long ago. VW Lupo with a sweet 1.7 SDI engine, cheap tax and insurance but most importantly will get 75mpg all day long with 100mpg possible with a bit of 'hypermiling'. Fuel light was on when I bought it so I brimmed the tank (£27) and did the same after doing the 55 mile journey back home from Kent doing 70-80mph with ease and it cost £1.50.

I'm finding myself jumping in this every day and driving the S8 as a treat every now and then. It's such a fun little car however, the standard suspension is bloody awful and surprisingly it wallows around a bit so I'm considering lowering it a little, putting some different wheels on and just playing around with it a bit.

From memory this was marketed as the 3L in Europe to signify it's claimed 3l/100km fuel economy?

Quite rare here - I suspect it pumps out a fair bit of particulate and NOx through all that lean burn tech?!

3L was a 1.2 Diesel with auto box, same as the A2 3L of the same era......

Both very rare, and for good reason....

The VW Lupo 3L is a 1.2 3 cylinder. My father-in-law has a LHD Audi A2 with a similar 1.2 3L engine. Equivalent to 95 mpg.

My son has the mechanically identical Arosa version.

I don't think I've ever seen the 1.7 SDI engine ever called "sweet" before. Ours reminds me of sharing a metal dustbin with a diesel genset.....

It goes sort of ok if you don't expect much and is very good on fuel. 60 - 65mpg real.

Be warned, it may only have 64 snorting horses (!) but they must deliver that power in sharp little kicks as these things are renowned for eating their gearboxes. Ours came with a motley assemblage of parts that resulted in the lowest gearing available - on the governor at 71 mph in 5th! I got another with the correct gearing from a scrappy after a prolonged search ("If I had enough of those I could retire mate") and still had to rebuild it.

My hot tip would be to change the gearbox oil now and look for shrapnel. There will be some, hopefully nothing big. One of the big killers is that there is no drop-out area for shrapnel (from graunching into reverse etc) and the low point is right under the crownwheel, which flicks any debris straight into one of the mainshaft bearings. There is a magnet to hold it until it forms a big enough lump to do some real damage....... genius design. The gears are all small enough to belong on a motorbike too.

Ours has 14" wheels from a Ibiza and the dampers are new cheapies from Poland which are actually really good and have transformed the handling.

Bit of a contrast to an A8, though ours are matching silver.

Nick
