An Audi dealership can do this for you. You take the 'new' cluster and all your keys. They read your existing cluster first, remove it from the car, put in the 'new' one, copy the data to it and if necessary will code the keys again. I got mine done four years ago and cost me £117.

When I was going through this my local Audi dealer said they couldn't do anything with a second hand cluster and new ones were NLA.

It would be definitely worth a phone call though. Over the years I have found some dealers more helpful than others. Maybe mine just weren't interested.

Thanks all, especially Frank, for your detailed replies and warnings. Not killing the car is definitely priority 1!

Our local Audi stealer are not noted for their love of older cars or their reasonable pricing, but I do know the parts man quite well (he does like the older stuff and appreciates my C4), so I will try them.

On reflection, there are a couple of other independents who may be worth trying, so I'll ask them too.

Swapping the displays looks possible but risky. I'd have no qualms about fitting new ones but I do worry about getting them off intact enough for re-use.

Cheers

Nick

I didn't have any issues at all. I first contacted the dealer and asked if they could do the changeover. I purchased the cluster from the forum sponsors and took it and all my keys to the dealer. Never had to prove where I got the secondhand one and that it wasn't from a stolen car.

As you say, maybe they just weren't interested. Always worth a call to other dealers, so long as they're not a million miles away.

So I called my local dealer today. Their service work prevention officer told me at first that they couldn't possibly work with customer supplied parts, especially not dirty second hand ones..... I pointed out that new are no longer available from Audi. He then went away to talk to their "lead tech" who apparently said it's only ever possible where the part numbers are absolutely identical and even then it sometimes "doesn't take". From which I conclude he's probably never done one.

Then I called another local indy. One whose favourite thing is re-mapping anything VAG with a turbo. He didn't blink.... £ 80 mate - bring the extra cluster and all your keys.... Booked in for next week. He was a bit doubtful about being able to change the mileage, but it's only 5k different anyway - so I don't care.

We'll see....

Nick

I really hope this works out. It would be nice to have another solution that doesn't rely on the hit and miss main dealer network.

Keep us posted.

Good news. Slightly OT, but I changed the cluster in the D3 S8 I had after retrofitting ACC and had the mileage 'increased' by around 25,000 to match the existing one. Will never make it as a cars salesman.

Job was done this afternoon. Took about an hour and a half and cost £99. Replacement cluster (supplied by me was £37 via eBay).

All works as expected. Mileage is cluster mileage not car mileage but only just under 6k difference.

Now I can read my odo and clock with near perfect displays. The central colour display is not quite as good as the original (which is perfect), but overall I’m happy enough. Garage is in Yeovil and and independent VAG specialist. They are Audi enthusiasts, especially the older S cars.

On to the next most irritating fault. Might be the camber following/pull. Or it might be the worsening noise from (I think) the PAS pump. Can seized one way clutches cause this effect as they do on diesels?

Not a bad price. Four years later and it cost you less than mine did to get done.

Sorry not to jack this thread. I am trying to repair a Bentley GT cluster 2005. They are made by Bosch which is used by Porsche Cayenne and the phaeton I believe. The cluster lcd has lines all across it with screen distorted. I changed with a new LCD but the same issue. Now I can send it to those cluster specialists who will charge me £200 £300 pound for a simple fix as they charge by the brand rather than Bosch part. I have read on few other sites about dry solder etc. Any tips welcome
