Default 4.2 FSI Q7 ....advice on purchase

OK... so after owning D4s for a while now and my current S8 being just shy of 700bhp and 1000nm. ...the time has come for a family barge.

I am hopefully purchasing a new property soon. And so the lavish luxury of the S8 must go. But how do I move on without feeling deflated that the end of my 10 years of glorious A8 S8 ownership has met it's demise?

I basically have expectations of the Q7 being A8 like...but I know it's far from it. And further more...does it even compete with a range rover? If I am going for a 4x4 I need to know it's not a saloon in a fancy frock and there is some substance behind the legend of quattro. The range rover has always had glowing off road reviews and so I am left torn between them.

I should point out that my budget is top end of 13k as I need the money out of the S8 for the property purchase.
So far I've seen a 4.2 FSI with double glazing, rse, leather. Pan roof, TV etc... for circa 9k and 90k on the clock on a 56 plate.
I've also seen range rover vouges for similar money..

Any advice would be amazing.

Merry Christmas all
Ian

Also would be interested to know what the main differences are in the range rover compared to a Discovery ?...

I am leaning towards a range or disco on the basis the disco is more practical with similar levels of luxury and comfort to the range?... or am I missing something

I don't have personal experience with any of them but I have considered Q7 before and it would have to be 4.2TDI for me. 4.2FSI would be 15mpg, 4.2TDI 25mpg, 6.0 TDI is tempting, similar economy to 4.2TDI but they are very rare, expensive and I would be scared it could cost a fortune if something goes wrong with or around engine.

RR are pure luxury but need the bigger engine as a lot of metal to pull.

Thanks for that! I am leaning towards the Vouge... I'm guessing the RR sport is not much good? I've heard they have significantly less space and ground clearance to the Vouge and that the Vouge is a true Range Rover.

I am however looking for petrol SC V8 ones. Seems the autobiography is the one to go for if you want a nice interior and some extra features.

I can't seem to find anything to say if they are double glazed like the A8?.. is it true they are noisy on the road... I kind of think of a range rover as being the ultimate wafting luxo 4x4. I guess what I am really worried about is not having the same level of refinement, build quality, smoothness etc all while having this great off road ability...

Tough choices but looks like I'll have to do some hunting and test driving in the new year.
I'm doing this for all the right reasons... but my gosh is it tempting to buy the new RR when I look and think "oh it's only 9k more than I paid for my S8"..... not a conversation for the shoulder devil that's for sure!

Q7 is most like an A6, in terms of spec and quality.

its very good, but i know 8 owners can feel a bit wanting.

Twin pane on the Q7 became standard very late on, but was a pre req for TV tuner, so find a tv tuner and you're sorted.

4.2 FSi is rare, and I suspect a bit sluggish really. The 4.2 TDi is a beast of an engine and it suits it well. Tends to be well specced too.

Noise isn't too bad. 21" wheels ride well. Twin pane helps a little. V8 engines sounds far better that the Agricultural V6 ones.

6.0 V12 a sweety, but with standard ceramics (and it needs em) watch out for expensive service bills unless recently changed.

Range Rover has some real brand appeal, which is good as JLR still can't manage build quality, ride quality or reliability anything like the Germans.

If you only want D4 luxury, a range rover might cut it.

If you want it to actually work all time, the Q7 sounds like a better bet

Thanks IT

The Q7s I was looking at were all fitted with a TV tuner. So that is good to know they get twin pane.

I'm really leaning towards the RR on the basis that most reviews state the Q7 is a bit plastic and tacky... where as the RR is clad in leather and rides rather well.. there is also the fact that the Q7 is not as capable off road as the RR.

So I think I'm now shopping for RR

How off road are we talking, is it proper off road up to the bonnet in mud or just putting 2 wheels on a verge? Tyres are noisy no matter what your sat in, descent off road tyres are pretty rubbish on road, say 50 mph and then dangerous. Road tyres on and you're very limited off road because they just fill with mud and become slicks. So put a winch on so you can self recover. I've never seen a Q7 with winch fitted. That said a Suzuki SJ410 will go anywhere a RR will and you won't cry when you scrape it.
If you seriously off road anything it'll be beat up quick, every panel will have damage, lights smashed and anything plastic broken. So buy a beat up 4x4 for that or a Unimog.
