That was a terrible move. TDi are for people that can't afford fuel. S models are a status symbol for those that have climbed above the ranks of repmobile.

Putting a TDi in the S4 and S5 may have made technical sense, but noone wants an S model that sounds like a tractor.

Thankfully way outside my budget, but wouldn't have one on principal tbh.

I love TDI engines, but a diesel S-model is an abomination. RS models especially so.

Its almost like they learned nothing from dieselgate. 30 billion euros in fines, and they just give the world the middle finger and make more models with diesels

All the exhaust aftertreatment on modern diesels means they're now effectively predicted to have shorter real world life expectancy than their petrol equivalents. Everything works at such high pressure/to such strict tolerances that you get into expensive repairs quite quickly, which as they age will just bring forward the point in time where they become uneconomic to repair.

Diesel makes sense when CO2 is your key output (ie you drive A LOT of miles) but if you do short trips routinely, or even long trips irregularly, the particulate and NOx outputs and the measures in place to trap and remove them before they reach the outside world actually means the gap in efficiency is nowhere near what it was when diesels could be as 'dirty' as you like with no regard to NVH either. They also make sense when you're lugging a lot of weight about as the torque delivery really does suit certain types of vehicle.

S and RS diesels are the answer to the question that next to no one is asking - am very much with Ian on this that they'd be excluded from my shopping list on principle.

I feel old as I type this, but my way of thinking has been to own a car I really wanted and run it until I don't need it or it's not worth fixing. I think I got that from my dad. I've been happy with three cars over the last 20 years.

I inherited a car off my late Dad, which is ironic as I've never had to drive as little as I do now, so #1 son is having that when he passes his test. It's a 2012 Fabia and to be honest, is absolutely great for what it is. Just exceeds all expectations. Just not something I'd chose or will be keeping myself.

I am looking for something else soon, but with the pending flip to EVs mandated, most of the ICE cars I would spend money on no longer seem to make sense buying - and I can't afford a new EV. I need something that I can drop the seats and put a couple of bikes and a big tent into easily.

I do look at what say, £10K used gets me and I don't like anything.

Aye but you have often moaned about high road tax or whatever it's called these days, if I like a car enough I would not care about what the tax costs, if you want it badly enough minor issues like Tax compared to overall ownership are not imporatant. Tax on my 3 works out about £28 a week, condsiderably less than I spend on beer and wine..though this past 12 months road tax has been a bit of a waste granted

What about this?
